Share your LO's eating routine

For those who have started solids, could you please share when you are feeding them? Are you offering solids before, after, or in between bottles/breastfeeding? And what time each day?

I know we had a poll recently about frequency of solids per day and most were at once or twice a day. So if you could share what your usual routine with them is, I would appreciate some ideas. Thanks!

Re: Share your LO's eating routine

  • Right now we are doing formula around 2am, 6am, 9am, 12:30pm, 4pm, and 7:30pm. Offering solids 15-20 mins after the 9am and 4pm bottles. He doesn't eat much of the solids (which I know isn't a big deal) but I don't know if it's because he is full from the bottle or bc he isn't overly into food yet. I would like to offer solids in between bottles but am worried then he won't take his bottles (and we already have issues with this as you know).

  • LO gets 4 8oz bottles everyday. When she gets up (630) she has bottle (830) we do fruit and oatmeal about 1.5/2oz then a bottle at 1030, and 230 then we do a veggie 1.5-2oz around 4 and then another bottle before bed at 630

  • Nurse around 6
Oatmeal and a fruit at 8:45
    6oz bottle at 11:45
    6oz bottle at 3:45
    Nurse at 6
    Veggie and fruit at 7
    Nurse before bed at 8

When I nurse DS, he doesn't always nurse for very long, especially now since he's sick. It is also a guessing game on whether he'll wake up in the MOTN; if he does, I'll nurse him and he'll go right back to bed.

  • We offer DD 2-3 meals a day.  We don't always do breakfast.  We are doing BLW so it's typically whatever we are eating.  She's still BFing and we make sure she's had a bottle/BF session within the last hour before eating.
  • I haven't started blw yet but I'm pretty sure you're supposed to only offer it after they have had their milk because that still needs to be their main source of nutrition until 12 months.
So OP I think your schedule you are already doing sounds perfect!
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Image and video hosting by TinyPic
  • 6 am - nurse
    9 am - 5 oz bottle
11ish am - 2 tbsp oatmeal w/ half a container of gerber fruit mixed (with breastmilk to thin)
    12 pm - 5 oz bottle
    3 pm - 5 oz bottle
    6 pm - nurse
7ish pm - some veggie - she's only been eating half a container, unless it's sweet potatoes, then she tears it up!
    8:30ish - nurse to sleep

It's a crap shoot as to whether she will during the night. It's usually sometime between 1-3am if she does wake up and won't go back down without nursing.

This is the schedule during the week, but weekends the times are usually different and we don't always give the cereal due to being out and about, etc.

  • Nurse at 6 am, probably gets around 8 oz
Gets three 4.5 oz bottles during the day between 8 am and 5 pm
Nurse when I get home around 5:30, he probably gets around 3.5 oz
6 pm he gets about a tablespoon of oatmeal made with formula and a puree, usually he eats anywhere from a half a container to the whole thing.
    7 pm bedtime.

DD eats two tablespoons of oatmeal first thing in the morning, followed immediately by a six-ounce bottle. The oatmeal does nothing to stop her from wanting the whole bottle, so we don't worry about giving it first. She gets four more six-ounce bottles throughout the day. Sometimes she gets an additional solid in the afternoon depending on how the day goes. I think I'm starting to notice she sleeps better at night if she got the afternoon solid, so I'm thinking we might need to make it more of a priority.

  • LO still eats a bottle every 3 hours except between 7 pm and 6 am. We usually do solids 30 min before bottle time. He gets a bottle at 6 am then around 8:30 gets solids. Then in the afternoon we do solids at either 2:30 or 5:30 depending on our schedule and how the day is going. He still seems to want a bottle on time even after eating but we just let him cue us on that.
  • Nothing is really set in stone, but here goes.

    5:30ish - bottle
    9am - oatmeal
    9:30 - bottle
    12 noonish - fruit
    12:30 - bottle
    3:30 - bottle
    6ish - veggies
    7:30 - bottle

The 9:30 and 12:30 bottles have less milk than the other bottles since he eats a few ounces of food.

DD only gets solids once a day because we're too rushed in the morning.  Her routine looks like this:

    6:30AM -- 5 oz bottle
    9:00AM -- 5 oz bottle
    11:30AM -- 5oz bottle
    2:00PM -- 5 oz bottle
    4:30PM -- 5 oz bottle
6:00 PM -- fruits, veggies, toast, noodles, etc
    7:00PM -- 5 oz bottle
    BED

Also, BLW is pretty easy since you can give them just about anything, but I also found this chart recently which i thought was helpful

  • Emmy gets a 6oz bottle between 5:00 or 6:00 then when we eat breakfast (usually between 7:30 -8:00) she gets a fruit and oatmeal. Then another 6oz bottle around 9:30. Then at 11:30 when we eat lunch she gets a fruit or veggie. At around 1:30 and 4:30 she gets 6 oz bottles. Then a fruit or veggie when we eat dinner. She also gets another 6oz bottle before bed at 8:00.

  • Thanks for all the replies! I know DS will likely be somewhat different from most babies since he has feeding aversions and the tube, but it is really nice to have some real life examples of what I can try as we work on getting him to eat more normally.

Today he had a 5oz bottle at 9, I fed him solids (1T oatmeal with 2T pear) at 9:30am and he completely refused his 12:45 bottle (down the tube it went). so I'm pretty sure it wasn't the solids affecting his appetite since it had been so long. He is still working through feeding issues so I have to remember that and be patient while trying to figure out the best schedule for him. It's hard though. :( But again, thanks for all your input and examples- SO helpful!

@Jalee85‌ no real schedule here either.
I nurse her when she wants. Usually 8 times a day. She gets about an ounce or oatmeal in the am sometimes mixed with fruit and sometimes she gets part if a whole banana.
In the evening she gets a veggie. Usually another ounce or so.

  • He gets formula whenever he's hungry. I think the sitter gives him oatmeal around 9 or 10 & veggie puree around 1. He eats either what we're having or fruit purée around 6:15.
  • I'm curious everyone saying their LOs get 6 or 8 oz bottles is this formula or breast milk? @danandkam‌ @MammaWolf7‌

  • We mostly nurse on demand here as well, which is about 8 times a day plus usually 1 MOTN feeding. He gets solids around 5pm and I have just started offering them around 8am as well.
