Circ Methods - STM

Since its been all labour and vag talk up in here - let's talk penises.

Please don't flame me. Its a personal decision, one I left up to DH and this was his choice.

I'm looking into doctors who do circs, but there is different methods. For those who have had their son's snipped - which method did your doctor use? Or did you find one heal better than the others?

Re: Circ Methods - STM

  • Our hospital used the plastibell method. I liked it well enough, however I'm not sure if it was user error or what, but it never fell off on its own. I had to take my 2 week old to the urologist to get it removed.

  • Thank you :) I think I read the plasti-bell method is supposed to be removed by the doctor?

  • We did a regular circ. My OB performed it in the hospital and he was sleeping soundly when they brought him back to us.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I think a regular is just a clamp and they free hand it with a scalpel in my research.
  • DS's pedi uses the plastibell. I was happy with it. It healed nicely and DS never seemed to notice it. The doctor said he didn't even finch or whimper while she was doing the procedure. He just stared at her. It didnt require any special care at all and fell off on its own except for a tiny strand of dead skin, which I snipped with baby nail scissors.

I assume a regular circumcision? There was nothing to take off or fall off. My mom (who is also a nurse) went with when they did the procedure, she said he made a small whimper and fell right back to sleep. When he was brought back to me he was still snoozing. Healed well, looks good today.
This.  If we have another boy we'll be having it done again.  We were very happy and comfortable with it.

  • I think that DS had the plastibell. It was no big deal and healed very quickly with no issues.

  • I have a list of doctors who do it - one won't even look at me until I have the baby, but the wait is 6 weeks after my due date. But I'll have to call around and see who does what method.
  • I assist with circ's and our hospital uses 3 different options depending on the Dr's preference. Most of our peds use the Gomco clamp. A few use the Mogan and one uses the plastibell. From what I've seen I prefer the Mogan. Babies tend to have very little bleeding with Mogan, but they are all fine if the Dr. is patient enough with the clamping.

  • The Mogan is more of a free hand isn't it? @Em&Jon
  • Not really. It clamps the skin above the glans and then the foreskin is removed along the clamp.

  • Call me crazy.
I didn't know there were 'options'.
  • I'm not too sure which was done. I remember the hospital pediatrician telling us about it and it leaving a little skin, but otherwise nothing.

  • My DH1 had his done a few days out, by my OB. I asked him about the plastibell prior, but he said he preferred to use the Mogen clamp, so we went with what he was comfortable with. We are very pleased with how easily it healed. Our son never seemed effected by it, after the procedure or during the healing phase.

I am a pediatrician, and I really prefer the gomco method. It has the lowest rates of infection, you don't have to worry about the plastibell coming off, and the cosmetic outcome is generally better than the mogen. Don't forget to ask about pain control. They should use lidocaine so he won't feel anything but apparently some docs don't!
