Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How long does it take your LO to go to sleep at night?

I put DS (13 mo. old) down around 7:45 for bed after his nighttime routine.  He sometimes cries a few minutes, but overall he just lies there softly talking/singing or just staring.  It can take him almost an hour to fall asleep.  If I stay in there with him and rub his back then he is out in 10 minutes (I rarely do this).  I'm just wonder if it is normal for him to talk so long to fall asleep.

  • My DD is 15 months and falls asleep quickly, but my son who is 3 can stay awake for over an hour before falling to sleep. I think it just depends on the kid. As long as he's content I think it's fine for him to just have some wind down time like that, it may be what his body needs to sleep well at night.

  • Anywhere from 5 minutes to 35-40 minutes. I'd say the average is 15 minutes. Depending on how tired she is, she takes her time to wind down and go to sleep.
  • We're anywhere between 5 min to 1 hour with DS.  As long as he isn't screaming, though, we just let him go with it.  It's his bedtime and he needs to learn to be in his bed/crib at that time.  It doesn't really bother me if it takes him up to an hour to fall asleep, as long as he's quiet and in his crib.  I just figure he needs more time to wind down, or he just didn't get enough energy out during the day to just crash.

We did just adjust his bedtime back by 30 min about a week and a half ago (from 7 to 7:30) but that had more to do with his wake up time.  He had decided 5:30am would be good instead of 6:30-7, and mommy wasn't having any of that.
  • 0-5 minutes after we put her in her crib.

  • DD almost always takes 45-60 minutes to fall asleep. We've tried tweaking her bedtime in both directions, but it doesn't matter , that's just the amount of time it takes her to unwind..

  • Depends on the day. Some days it's as little as 5 minutes, some days it has been closer to 60. Once it was 3 hours but we'd done a lot of things that threw LO off that day (always communicate with all caregivers and never feed your kid 4 fruit cups in a single day. Waaaaaaay too much sugar!) Most of the time kiddo is pretty good about just singing themselves to sleep, so if it takes longer, we don't really care.
  • DD is 13months and goes down at 730-745 and also will play in crib for about 1/2 hour to an hour. As long as she isnt crying this doesnt bother me. there are 2 stuffed puppies in there for her to play with ONLY in the crib so they keep her interest.
  • Thank you all. I feel better knowing other babies take this long to go to sleep. I do think he likes hanging out by himself. He really does know how to entertain himself.

@JandACoffee - It doesn't matter if I move his bedtime out, he always take that long to go to sleep.

  • My daughter is 14 months and I still rock her to sleep each night. She gets tired between 6:30-7pm. I give her a bottle of warm milk and rock her. She is normally out within 15 mins. She does have her nights where she goes to bed long after 7 as well.

Mine usually goes down within 30 seconds of me putting him in his crib. We did sleep train though which made it easier.

If he's quiet, I would just let him be.
