Is baby being overfed?

Hi all- I went back to work last week. My mom has been watching baby 1 day a week. For our other sitter, DH, and myself, LO takes about 3 oz. a feed. The first day my mom watched LO she said he took 4 oz. at 2 feeds. I just figured he may have been hungrier that day. The next time she watched him she said he took 4 oz. and would have taken more. After this, I talked with her about paced feeding and that I wanted to make sure he wasn't being overfed. Today at worked I pumped 9.5 oz and mom fed him 14 oz while I was away. I think my supply is fine as LO is content when I nurse him. Is he just more hungry with someone else? Or is she way overfeeding him and setting me up for trouble since I can't keep up?

  • My girls (9 months old) take 3 3oz bottles over 8 hrs. I generally pump around 18oz, but some days am short, some days over.

  • My guy is 9 weeks. I am gone 9 hrs so am getting about an ounce an hour
  • I would say he's being overfed if he only drinks that much when he's with her.  Any chance you (or your DH) can watch her feed him to see if she really knows how to pace?
  • Good advice! I will see if I can watch her feed sometime soon. Thanks ladies!
  • I was having the same trouble with my MIL. I have had to start setting up all her bottles myself premeasured so that she does not overfeed her. I leave the same number of BM bags for my husband as i do the MIL and my husband would always have some left over and my MIL would always use it all! If the food is there they will continue to eat most of the time. I would suggest making the bottles before hand so she isnt measuring things herself and take the guess work out.
  • @theresat- thank you! I think I will try that. DH watched her give a bottle and said she is doing great. So my LO probably does need the extra ounces!
