Weight Gain for Baby

I know we have discussed this before, or I seem to remember it.  Anyway, Lily only weighs about 16 pounds at almost 11 months old.  She has been walking since 8.5 months old, but I worry about her.  She eats all the food, all the time.  I just wonder if she should be heavier or if this hardly gaining weight thing will impact her later on.

Anybody know, or am I just over worrying this?

Re: Weight Gain for Baby

  • My good friend's little girl is 17 pounds and 16 months old. She eats awesome but is just skinny! I think some babies just metabolize food differently. She'll be so happy about this someday!

  • Mine is a little over 17lbs and was in the 9th percentile at his last appt. Like your LO, he eats a LOT! I don't worry about it because I know he is eating what he should be eating. They just have good metabolism!

  • Well, duh disclaimer is that if you're concerned you should talk to your doctor.  That said, some kids are just small.  Someone has to be the 0% and someone the 100% on the charts, kwim? :)  Has she stayed pretty true to her own growth curve?  Q is about 18.5 and is a whole pound smaller, every single month, than his brother was and his brother is still mega skinny - 29 pounds and he turns 4 in two weeks.

  • @elmoali @Sympkin The doc looks at the charts, but I don't think that she really paid attention at the 9 month appt because of some other circumstances with insurance and with her having a super watery eye.  I plan on talking to them, but they usually just say that even though she is barely on the overall charts, her curve is good in height vs. weight ratio.

She eats table food completely.  No purees at all anymore.  I liked the purees better because I could keep track of how much she was eating better.  I will say that this was more of an assurance kind of thing.  I've had anxiety over pretty much everything since Lily was a certain age.

At our 9 month appt our dr was happy DD is mostly self feeding but said that babies often won't eat as much when the self feed because they get bored and stop eating before they are full. He said to feed fatty foods. I often sautéed her veggies in oil and we do full fat yogurt often.

  • I don't have any additional advice other than what pp states but I constantly stress over LO's eating habit. He only finger feeds and refuses to nurse/take bottles all the time. I doubt he's getting all the ounces he needs but you can't force a baby to drink. LO was 17 pounds at his 9 month app but was keeping up with his 9% growth curve so pedi was unconcerned.
