Reflux babies?

Pedi just diagnosed lo with reflux. Lo has been arching and fussing and not wanting to eat. Also never had been a good sleeper but is now getting up like 6 times a night. I'm at a loss with what to do. Dr didn't want to put lo on meds yet. Suggested putting lo to sleep all night in the swing but I am terrified of SIDS or flat head.

Re: Reflux babies?

  • When my son was first suspected of having reflux, the doctor said to sleep him at an incline.  It helped only minimally.  Zantac and a change in my diet (I BF) is what worked for us.

  • Get the meds. Sleeping at an incline won't help anything but sleep and that is marginal at best.

  • Get the meds. Inclined sleeping will help at night only. Well, if it helps at all.

My LO sleeps in her bouncer every night. She has vomiting issues and I'm scared she will choke(which she has before and that was scary). To me the choking hazard of being flat in her crib out weighs the SIDS risk of sleeping else where.
  • Get the meds. I am side eye your Dr who recommended the swing sleeping vs meds.

  • I agree that you should try the meds. There is very little risk in trying zantac. I did a lot of research in addition to interrogating my pediatrician who I trust and respect before giving it to Ben @ 2 months. She assured me the benefit would outweigh any risk I'm trying the zantac for 2 weeks to see if we saw improvement. Also sleeping at an incline in his swing helps us a ton, we got a snuza because I too was concerned sids. Def worth the $65. Ben's sleeping went from 2hrs max up to 8-10 consistently in the 6 weeks following starting zantac.

  • Question - sorry to thread jack but our pediatrician said to try it for a couple weeks and gave us a months worth. Well it worked so I used it everyday. His appointment isn't for a week and I'm going to run out before then. Do I wait or call for more?

Call. They might want you to take a break to see if LO is ok now, but I doubt it since it's only been a month.
  • Are your LO taking actual Zantac or a generic? Our little guy is taking ranitidine and HATES the taste. Do your babies eat the Zantac with out a problem?

Yes! Baby hates it! I have such a hard time giving it to him BUT before Zantac was up 8 or 9 times a night & never napped more than 20 min. Now sleeps 9 hours and naps for 1.5 hr! Changed our life!!!!

  • You can always find a compounding pharmacy and see if they will make the Zantac for you and they can usually change the taste as well...
