Going from pumping three times a day to 2

I have a 9 month old DD. Currently I pump three times during the work day. I will be going to twice a day starting next week. Looking for advice or tips to avoid mastitis and or clogged ducts. Thanks.

  • No advice as I am looking to drop a nursing session at work as well. But want to see what others say

  • i didn't have any trouble when i dropped from 3 pumps a day to 2. i used to pump at approximately 11:00, 1:30, and 4, until DS was about 7/8 months. we had started on solids, my supply dropped a little, and i just wasn't getting enough from the 3rd pump for it to be worth it. i just rearranged so that i was pumping at 1 and 4/4:30. i just dropped the extra session one day and it was fine.
  • I also had no issue at all dropping to 2 pumps a day during the workday (with both sons).  I didn't do anything particularly special.  Just instead of 8 AM, 1 PM, and 4 PM, I went with 11 AM and 4 PM.

If you're going to be draining the breasts anyway with bedtime nursings, I think that should help safeguard you from mastitis and or clogged ducts.  Of course, if you start to feel some discomfort, you can act fast with making sure to nurse on that side first and breast massage and all that.  And since long hot showers are one of my favorite luxuries these days, if you do get some discomfort, it is a perfect excuse to stand in that hot shower after work.

...And on that note, I must go and fantasize about my next long, hot shower. : )

  • I dropped a pump at work about a month ago and my output slowed by a few oz a day. This hasn't been an issue for me. But I did ovulate about 10 days ago and now am having my period first time pp. I think this has a lot to do with it. Also, while on my period my output has dropped by 1/3. But the good news is it is nice to pump one less time per day.
  • Thanks for the replies. DD doesn't STTN currently so I shouldn't have a problem emptying fully. Has anyone just tried shortening their sessions to phase one out instead?
