Prenatal Vitamins

So I spoke to my dr about a good pill to take, and he said to take any OTC pill as long as it was prenatal. Which I did start taking one I got at Wal-Mart called Nature Valley, I switched it up to the similac vitamins this month, they have two separate pills. One contains fish oil and DHA the other is like a regular pill. They make me a little sick but I want to take the best for me and the baby. any suggestions??

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • I started taking the similac ones with this pregnancy and they made me sick, too. I switched to the one a day prenatals, which I took last pregnancy and I haven't felt sick since. They're a little expensive compared to similac, but i feel like it's worth it. They also have 1 regular pill and the dha pill.

  • My dr said DHA can make you feel sick, so take before bedtime.

I switched to flintstones. The prenatal ones made me feel too sick even when I took them before bed. My OB says that's fine as long as I'm eating well.

  • Mine are Rainbow Light, I think. They're the only ones I've tried so far that don't make me sick and don't contain ingredients I worry about. Bonus, they're apparently vegan, have non-constipating iron (no problem whatsoever), and have a probiotic blend to boot. I got them at Target, and they're a bit more expensive, but hey, if I'm not getting sick then I'll take what I can get.

  • I second the one-a-day prenatals. They haven't made me sick at all.

  • I take Nature Made prenatal Muti + DHA because I saw them at Costco, the bottle was big and cost effective. During my first pregnancy (last year and later half of 2012) I took OB Complete One because it is what my doctor prescribed. But last month when I went to my Dr he prescribed a different prenatal pill so I figured I'd be fine sticking with what I have from Costco... I've never had a problem taking pills thankfully.

  • I'm taking the CVS brand prenatal with a folic acid supplement.

  • I take the Nature Made vitamin that was posted about also because I found it at Costco.  It hasn't made me sick at all, but if the pill lingers in my mouth a second longer than it takes to swallow, it does taste awful.
  • Target gummy prenatal's are the best.

I too take the Nature Made one and I usually take it right before bed. The other day, I took it a couple of hours before bed and felt a little nauseous so am going back to take it right before bed.

  • I started out with CVS gummies and an iron supplement, but around week 8, the gummy texture started making me gag so I switched to Nature Made + DHA liquid softgels. I also take them right before bed and I haven't felt sick from them since I started.

  • I take the Up and Up (Target) gummy prenatals.  They have DHA in them and it hasn't bothered me at all. They also don't have iron, which helps with the sickness.  Once I start feeling better from this nausea, I'll go back to taking them with an iron supplement.

FWIW, I took a prenatal pill + DHA pill with my first pregnancy and it was awful, especially when I was sick in first/second tri.  The pill was huge, and iron upset my stomach and I would have these awful fish/algae burps from the DHA pill.  If you can find a prenatal combined with DHA, that is the way to go.

  • I'm taking walmart brand gummies, Spring Valley with DHA and folic acid. Regular pill form prenatals with iron made me sick!
  • I take Solaray Once Daily Prenatal Multi-Vitamin with Morning Ease Blend plus Folic Acid, Iron & DHA. They are vegetarian which I like (DHA is sourced from microalgal oil -- aka, algae). It doesn't make me sick BUT I can't stand the smell or taste of it the second the pill is anywhere near me. Since it's a dry capsule, I've resorted to breaking it open and putting it in my smoothie every morning.

I take rainbow light for my multi and spectrum DHA (algae based). Make sure you take them with food, you'll absorb them better and it helps reduce and nausea and/or heartburn

  • I was taking the Nature Made with DHA softgels, but those things are huge and they were starting to make me gag.  I don't normally have trouble swallowing pills, but if it went down the least bit wrong all my dinner was coming back up.  I asked my doctor and he prescribed Vitafol-Ultra for me and I love them.  They are super small and easy to take, and have plant based DHA so no icky burps.  The only drawback is they are super pricey.  I have been alternating them with the gummies I have just to save $ even though I'm not a huge fan of the gummies.

  • I also use Rainbow Light! Bought them off Amazon after reading overwhelmingly positive reviews (they're the top rated prenatal). They are a little pricey, but worth it I guess. They don't have DHA in them though, so I bought a separate bottle of fish oil pills (also from Amazon, I'm kind of an addict) to make sure I'm getting DHA in my diet.
  • I take TheraNatal Complete mfg. by Theralogix (it's what my RE recommended) & it consist of 3 pills. Price wise I have no idea how they compare to others! They are mailed to me automatically as a 90 day supply & the cost is $58.00 (use to be $55 until my most recent order) which includes shipping. At times they have bothered me when my ms was extremely bad & those days I substitute with two Flintstones vitamins.

  • I take the vitafusion prenatal gummy vitamins. They still have the DHA and frolic acid in them but they don't have the iron. We found I couldn't handle the iron supplement in the other ones I was taking, so my OB suggested these and I haven't gotten sick from them. Plus they tast good, which doesn't hurt.

I take these exact ones and I actually like them. I've tried others and I just cant bare them.
  • Either take them with your biggest meal or right before bed. I do the nature made because I don't have to take a separate DHA. Plus Kroger has them on Bogo special all the time and it's a steal!

I take these too. They rule.
I take these also.  They taste good and I have not felt sick at all from taking them.
  • I take Honest prenatals AND a DHA. I get them at a discount through a friend so I am not picky. Not sick but I do take before bed to be safe. Apparently they are just like the New Chapter ones. I don't advocate if you can get the same ones store bought.

My ob prescribed vitafol for me also and they are expensive, but I switched to the generic version and they are SO much cheaper! Ask your doctor if you can take the generic to save money :)

  • I take the Kroger brand prenatal + DHA and take it before bed. I always make sure I take it with a mini snack too and have done great.

  • I prefer a real food based vitamin, so I have the rainbow light brand, but I also take 2 fish oils, and 2 coconut oils as well.
Mom to 3 wonderful Free Birthed kiddos
  • I take a liquid prenatal- Natures Plus. It looks like pureed green veggies, but taste like a flinstones vitamin...and doesn't make me sick. I use to do the Rainbow light ones but after learning they contain red raspberry leaf, and that can cause uterine contractions, I decided with my history of miscarriage/premature labor I did not want to take anything that might stimulate any contractions etc. The Natures Plus does not contain any bad ingredients and has several whole food concentrates in it as well. I get mine from vitacost cause its really cheap there. Another plus with a liquid is that I know for sure it is absorbing into my body and not just passing thru like some vitamin pills have been found to do in testing :-)

  • Thanks for reminding me to take mine. Late night and Ai had not thought about it until this thread.
I am not sure which one I take but they are gel ones. They are bigger in size but much easier for me to take.
