Cloth Diapering

New to CD

I usually frequent my BMB and 3-6 month, but I just purchased some gently used Kawaii minky one size cloth diapers, and I'm just now trying to figure out how to use them, wash them, etc. I will be on this board a lot, so I wanted to introduce myself. I had my second boy in November and wasn't sure I wanted to go down the CD path, but here I am! What is the best detergent to use for cloth diapering? That's my first question. :) I look forward to getting to know you all on this board.

  • Welcome! Look to try a few different brands before you fill out your stash.

I tend to like the clean-rinsing detergents, i.e., no fragrance, whiteners/brighteners, enzymes, etc. Tiny Bubbles, Country Save and Miocare are the ones I've used and been happy with.
  • I don't have any advice for you because I'm also a CD newbie, but I am enjoying learning with you.  :)

  • Welcome! PPs answered your questions pretty well, I just want to chime in with you HAVE to try Blueberry diapers if you're up for doling out the $$, they're just great. I could have a complete stash of Blueberry products and be totally satisfied. Also, don't be intimidated by prefolds and covers. I spent a lot of $$ up front trying out cheap pockets and AIO that my heavy wetter just leaked through, but he hasn't leaked through a prefold and they really are so easy to use. Okay I'll back off now :)
  • I haven't had any issues with Tiny Bubbles... when I can't find it and switch to something else, I almost always end up with problems.  I have an HE front loader and very hard water.

  • @haileyq I have checked out Blueberry! I like their stuff. I like your advice about prefolds and covers. I have actually been considering going in that direction as well as trying other pocket diapers. Thanks for the push! I have some saved on my Amazon wish list. What diaper covers do you guys recommend? I was looking at the Thirsties Duo Wrap Snaps. The Kawaii minky I put my baby in today leaked out the side. Maybe I should look into another kind of insert. I am using the microfiber insert. These diapers are huge!

  • @jcwinsto I have an HE front loader washer. I'm not actually confidant I can put anything but liquid in it. I will look at the instructions. Thank you for the list recommendation. Ya'll are so helpful!

I have an HE FL as well. I bought it used so never had instructions. I've always used homemade powder in it and now I use Tide for diapers. I've had it for 4 years and never had any issues with build up in my pipes or the machine or powder not dissolving. I think the key is to not use too much. My guess is that people who have build up issues are used to using a lot of detergent in a TL and use too much in a FL. I use about 1-2 Tbls of homemade and only up to the 1 line on the Tide. Just make sure it is HE Tide.

  • Hey, I know you! Cloth diapering is the shiz. My SO was soooo anticloth at first and today I caught him talking to his employee about how great they are.

    Tide makes HE powder.

Was the Kawaii leaking out of the leg? What are your rise snaps like?
  • I have a HE FL as well and the cartridge that holds the liquid detergent comes out and the scoop of powdered detergent goes right there.

I really like my Thirsties Duo Wraps, and they have new aplix that is awesome if you go that route. Blueberry coveralls are great quality but they're huge, so if you've got fitteds etc they work really well for that. If you like a trimmer fit you'd probably be bummed. I love them though. I also like Best Bottoms covers, but they are a smaller OS so if you have a huge kid you may not like them. FWIW My son is huge but he can still fit into it, who knows if it will last all of his diapering days though.

MF isn't especially absorbent and it is prone to compression leaks. I like Geffen Baby hemp inserts under a NB MF insert, but prefolds or flats pad folded into pockets are a cheap, absorbent option too.
