Pregnant after a Loss

questions about progesterone suppositories

Evening, ladies :) For those of you who are also using Crinone (or something similar, suppository cream), I have a couple odd/semi-embarrasing questions... how does it all come out? Is there a point when you can't fit any more? This might sound crazy, but not much is coming out for me during the day, so when I go to insert more at night, I feel like there's resistance when I'm inserting the applicator. I have an internal ultrasound in a little less than twoweeks... after 12 more days of using it I'm wondering how that will all work?! Am I supposed to be cleaning out somehow?! Thanks for any input! Hope I'm not the only one wondering about these crazy things!

Re: questions about progesterone suppositories

  • Ha ha, it's not crazy for wondering! This is going to be a TMI response, fair warning...

The nurse at my REs office told me when she gave me the prescription that it doesn't come out like other forms do, so she gave me a heads up to "scoop it out" every now and then. It's absolutely disgusting, but each morning in the shower I did that before taking the next dose. I'm pretty sure that within 12-24 hours the progesterone has been absorbed and it's just the gel medium that's left, no need for that! You could ask your dr if that's ok first though if you want to make sure it's safe for your situation.

It is absolutely disgusting. I had them until week 13....and omg...not even pantyliners could save my poor panties. They all ended being cardboard texture (and there you go if you wanted TMI, sorry!). I think is like a kind of wax that they use for the medicine to stick together until it dissolves with the body heat. Like rox said, is not needed :) I also had a shower, sometimes twice at day... Good luck!

  • I guess I'm not sure whether I'm glad it's not coming out in its own or not! Neither scenario sounds enjoyable! Hopefully I don't have to use it much longer!

Trust me, if it was coming out you would know it! I have to wear a panty liner all the time and it gets covered with the wax.

    Good luck!

  • I believe I was told all the meds are absorbed within 20 minutes or so of application, so there is no harm in "cleaning it out" once in a while. For me, it was never necessary as it all came out on its own.

  • I agree with the "scooping out".  I don't do it everyday, but about every other day.  Mine does come out during the day too.  What fun!

  • I only scoop it out if I'm going to have sex. And wow... it really gets in there, in all the nooks and crannies! Other than that, it doesn't bother me much. Some of it does come out on its own throughout the day on a pantyliner or when I use the bathroom.

This. I had the wax bullet-shaped suppositories, and they completely destroyed all my undies. I've washed them countless times and they still have that stiff texture! Suckssss.
  • Ok, so sorry for tmi, but the scooping process was much more difficult than anticipated!! It's so dry up there, it hurt first of all. And I feel like there's so much that I just can't get to?! Hopefully I get enough out before my u/s so the RE can fit that big wand up there! It seems like it could have harmful effects if it just stays up there indefinitely?!
  • You can try to do it in the shower. I am using the bullet suppositories now so it doesn't have the build up but it ruins underwear as other have said. Four more days on it for me but who is counting?? ;)
  • If you don't mind me asking, how long did you all use them?  My RE is having me use them proactively- he's not sure if that's what caused my miscarriages or not- so I'm thinking I'll only be on them until 8-10 weeks?  That's still another 3-5 weeks away though!
  • Another thing that I've found helps is to take a bath. A lot of it just comes out on its own then. You might need to wipe the bathtub clean afterward though....   ;)

  • Thanks @ BookishMomma - I'll give that a try this weekend :)  I LOVE hot, steamy baths... it will be hard to make sure I keep the temp down!

  • My doctor said that many stop at 10 weeks but she said I can do it until 12 weeks.
