Babies: 3 - 6 Months

first solid food-how much do they eat?

LO is 5.5 mo last week and we just had our first day of solid food. I prepared 1 tbs of rice cereal and a veggie BLW style. I know that she will continue to get most if not all nutrients from BM so I didn't expect her to eat all that much but she hardly ate anything at all :)
It was a fun play time and she enjoyed sitting at the grown up table with us for dinner. But I'm wondering how much other babies start out eating when they start solid. My MIL isn't familiar with BLW and she almost had a heart attack when she saw the photo of DD holding a teether size broccoli but DD had a great time gumming that broccoli, although she did not actually eat any of it. I think some ofter posts mentions their LOs not eating significant portion of solid food until they were 8-10m. When did your LO start eating eating solids? In the mean time, I'm trying to minimize BM waste, have you tried rice cereal or puree with water instead of BM?

  • Very minimal amounts. DS wants to feed himself so I put a taste on the spoon and hand it to him. He is not very good at navigating that spoon into his mouth. If he manages to get a Tbsp into his mouth I'd be surprised.

I give him asparagus spears to chew on and all he's managed to swallow are tiny little specks so far.

  • @cagoldi, that sounds just like my DD :)  Asparagus is definitely on our list of foods to try with her. last night was cucumber and it was not a hit at all with her. She made the funniest "what the heck is this!?!" face.

@somerandomchick, eating naked may be a good idea since her bath time is right after.  She sure does loves playing and creating mess with food. I am thinking of stopping rice cereal because as you said, it doesnt help with nutrition anyways.

  • Also, he doesn't get a Tbsp with each bite, of course. I just meant cumulatively with all the little spoonfuls I offer him.

We also feed him in a bib and diaper most of the time and do a bath right after that.
  • My LO eats about a tbsp of cereal in the morning and a few bites of something else at night.  I'm just letting him taste different foods at this point.  So cute to see the faces he makes when he tries something for the first time.
