Went today to see RE to start cycle #2. A scan revealed that my ovaries were the size of tennis balls & that they were covered in lots of tiny cysts. RE not putting me on BC because he thinks that because they are so small, they will resolve on their own. This super blows. He said he wouldn't recommend having sex for a bit either. So, another month wasted & down the drain.

Yeah. He walked in and asked me how I was feeling.... I knew that was a bad sign. I feel like I've been punched in the stomach (emotionally speaking). It's so hard to fight the feeling of wanting to just give up.

Aw i'm so so sorry! Don't give up!! I hope you aren't experiencing any pain. My 3 month bench has turned into an eternal one so I totally understand how bad it sucks... especially when you aren't expecting it. FX its over soon!

Thanks ladies... I wasn't expecting this, at all. But, it is what it is. @mozzarella13 - did yours resolve within the cycle? My biggest fear is that they won't resolve and then we are dealing with this crap for another cycle. And another. And another.

@Mommalawyer‌ my cyst was a big hemorrhagic one, and that type takes longer to dissipate, much like a bruise. It stuck around for 6 weeks or so, and was very frustrating. If yours are hormonally driven you may have much better luck than I did!! Also, if RE isn't putting you on BCPs they must not be too concerned about them which is a good sign!!

I'm sorry, I got benched this cycle for the same exact reason. I knew it was bad when he was calling out large numbers (and a lot of them) during the scan for the nurse to record. I was even more sure when he finished and told me to get dressed and he'd be back in a minute to chat. I'm on BCP and I have 1 week down and 3 more to go before my next scan. @pmpknbride - Im sorry you got benched too.

I was kind of surprised that he didn't put me on BC. I thought that was the standard protocol. But he said that there were just a lot of little ones, so he did not think that was necessary. I don't know why, but that worries me a bit. However, I am just trying to take it in stride without having a major meltdown. I didn't know there was a benched check in, I will keep my eye out for it. I wouldn't worry about not being put on BCP, as I do not ovulate on my own and do not have a normal cycle I was encouraged to take bc to keep things moving so I would actually have a new cycle in 28 days. Without it I would have had to go in for bloodwork, get a prescription for provera to induce a withdraw bleed, and yadda yadda. I don't think bc actually does anything to reduce the cysts.

@Mommalawyer‌ - same thing has happened with me. I went in and had a cyst- maybe he said 5mm? Or cm? Not sure. Either way- he said it was hormonal and would go away on its own. He didn't put me on BCP because of that. I went back 3 days later and it had reduced by 50%. I am anovulatory and often amenorrhea so he said there's a chance I won't start producing follicles on my own. If this is the case, when I go back in- if the cyst has diminished- he would then start injections again. Otherwise, if follicles start and there is a dominant one he would let us try on our own this cycle. Maybe that is what your RE is doing with you as well. Hope your cysts go away and you won't be set back too far!

@mommalawyer Did you have any symptoms going into your baseline u/s apt that you may of had cysts? I remember you had to take a couple days off work after IUI. I had a lot of little follicles besides my 5 mature ones, so what you're going thru kind of has me worried (I don't mean to sound selfish, I do absolutely wish you quick resolve). My RE hasn't mentioned anyting about OHSS & I'm currently 2DPO of TI and haven't really had any pain besides feeling really bloated...

@missem15 - I did not have any cysts at my baseline. I have had several baselines, but was not able to start. On my IUI cycle, at my baseline I had 20 follies. I stemmed from CD3 to CD 8. I over responded because the follies went nuts. He had also said something about my estridol level, which was at 915 or 951 (I can't remember which). The day that I triggered, I had an 18mm, 17mm, 2 16mm, and a 14mm. I had a whole bunch that ranged from 13mm to 4/5mm. Did you use a trigger? When we had the "do you want to go forward with this" appointment, he explained to me that if I did not trigger, I probably wouldn't end up with OHSS. (However, I have seen other ladies post with what they were told that seems to conflict with this, so I don't know). I triggered on a Wednesday. I had the IUI on Thursday. I O'ed on Thursday. I was bloated and crampy, but NOTHING hit until mid day Saturday. You will know if you have it, trust me. Then I was was on bed rest Saturday, Sunday. They recommended that I don't eat solid food, cause it seemed to make it worse. I went to work on Monday, which was a huge mistake. Spoke to RE, told me to go home, which I did. I stayed at home until Thursday. Unfortunately, according to RE, the cysts are just a residual effect from what happened. I don't know if it is solely the meds, the OHSS, or a combo of both. I think that you can end up with cysts without OHSS, but I am not sure. RE told me that my situation happens in only 4-5% of fertility patients, so I am not sure. I wouldn't worry, until you have something to worry about. Precautionary, I would start drinking gatorade and V8 along with foods high in sodium. Rest. Keep your feet up. FX.

@sherrimspires - He did not give me any measurements. He eluded that there were just a whole bunch of little ones that were residual from the medication. He said something about my body being really sensitive to the hormones and that because of the medication it made me borderline poly cystic ovarian something. I have no clue what that meant and I was still in such shock that I didn't follow up on it. He didn't seem that concerned and reiterated that they should go away "in about 3 weeks." I was kinda irritated that I wasn't going to see him again until my next cycle because of exactly what happened to you..... What if they are gone by a week or something? Oh well. Good luck!
