Getting twins out of hospital

Let me just preface this post by saying that I feel like a complete idiot asking this, but, I have been sitting here thinking and can't come up with a good answer.

How did you get your twins out if the hospital? When DS was born, someone pushed me in a wheelchair while I had DS in his infant carrier and DH went and got the car to meet us at the hospital entrance. So with twins, how do you logistically do this? I won't be able to put two infant carriers on my lap.

Again, sorry if this is a really stupid question, but, it's been on my mind, lol!

Re: Getting twins out of hospital

  • Mine were in the NICU and the hospital had a cart. We sat both carseats on the cart and I pushed it (10 days postpartum). I imagine if you take them home like regular, someone will push you with one carseat and another nurse or aide or something will carry the other seat.

  • Do you have to put them in the infant carriers to take them out? Can you leave those in the car and just carry the babies out in your arms?

FTM so I don't know if this is a possibility or not!

  • I always assumed you would walk out with your husband and a nurse, then once you are down your husband can run get the car.
  • Mine were escorted down by a nurse. They would not allow us to preload them in carseats, so MH had to pull up the car and then we had to load them in. It was cold and rainy and a mess, but we made it home.

  • @quinncat‌ , that is kind of what I was thinking too. I figure if I have to be pushed in a wheelchair, DH can push the stroller, then I can stay with the stroller while he goes and gets the car. With DS we had to bring the infant seat up to our room and put him in it prior to leaving.

I am sure the hospital will prepare us for leaving....I just don't want to lug too much unnecessary stuff. But, if the above plan works, DH can always take our bags out first, get the stroller, and we are good to go!

Mine were in the NICU 2 hours away from home so day before discharge I drove down roomed in with them over night, I had to come all alone so a nurse helped me with a cart and we put them in the seats and wheeled them down. She sat with them as I pulled the SUV up an helped me click them in. Most terrifying drive home ever with a 3 pound baby an a 4 pounder in a blizzard for 2 hours in the dark all alone.

ETA: my hospital did not allow strollers on the post Partum/ NICU floor only in the main lobby but no where else.

  • Mine were in NICU a few extra days past my discharge, so I was walking, not in a wheelchair.  We had to put them in the carseats before we left the floor anyway.  They make sure you strap them in right, and preemies have to pass a carseat test to go home.  My husband brought all the stuff down to the car and pulled it up into loading, and came back up. So when we left, he carried them (one in each hand, I carried the remaining stuff), and then we loaded everyone in.

  • I was wondering this exact same thing the other day!  We had to bring the car seat into our room for DS so the nurse could make sure he was strapped in ok and show us how to do it.

  • Mine were also in the NICU for a while so I was able to help DH carry stuff out.  But there are lots of nurses and other staff that would be glad to help you out as well.
  • Mine left at different times. Baby A went home when I was discharged. A nurse pushed my wheelchair and DH left the car in a loading zone then carried her in the car seat. When Baby B left we walked & carried her in a car seat escorted by a nurse to the loading zone. Nbd.

We got everything together then my husband parked out front. The nurses had to check them before we could leave as well.

After he got the car he came back up and carried one carseat while a nurse wheeled me with the other carseat on my lap.
  • I was wheeled out with one in each arm. Our hospital didn't require they be in their seats to go out.

  • Our hospital wouldn't let us carry them out. I was wheeled by the nurse and DH carried the babies out. He had also pulled up the car and carried the car seats up to the room, so the car was there. But if your hospital doesn't allow that he can get the car when you guys get outside.

  • DH carried both babies in their car seats. We still had a nurse escort, though. It was not a big deal at all.

  • They were in the NICU and we were allowed to pre-load into carriers. We actually were not allowed to carry them, a nurse had to. H went to get the car while I stayed with babies and we had two nurses each carry one carrier down to the loading area.

We were only supposed to get one of them but the NICU surprised us and discharged both at the same time. H had been at work and I had come down early in the day so we had 2 cars. He drove the babies home and I drove separately.

  • Mine came home at different times so it wasn't an issue, but my hospital didn't allow you to carry the babies out in car seats - I had to be in a wheelchair with the baby in my arms.  This was true both times, even though I wasn't a patient anymore when DS came home.

  • Our hospital had my husband move the van up to a passenger loading area then he came up to meet us. He had already taken most of our stuff out to the van so when we left, my husband carried both of the twins in their carriers and an orderly pushed me out in a wheelchair with the last few items hooked onto the handles. I felt kind of weird not carrying anything/anyone, but I wanted to have them properly strapped into their seats in my room rather than struggling to do it on the sidewalk next to the van.

  • DH and a nurse rolled me out to the lobby with the infant carriers. I stayed in the lobby on the wheelchair with the babies while DH went to bring the car around to the loading area, then he came in and got me.

My kids were not in the NICU and no one asked to see their car seats. DH pulled the car up to the entrance and I got pushed in a wheelchair while I held both babies.
  • My kids were in the nursery and were 4 weeks old at discharge. The nurse pushed them down in one of the bassinets (both babies in one) and e put them in the car seats at the car. I suspect eac hospital has their own rules and has a plan for families with multiples. :)
