Extended BFs PP Question

Just wondering how common it is to NOT have gotten a postpartum period yet? Anyone else in the same boat?  My daughter is almost 20 months and I'm still BFing.  She nurses in the MOTN still too, but I mentioned this to someone else and they said I should talk with my doctor.  I thought it was typical to not have a postpartum period yet if you're still BFing, especially overnight.  Thoughts?

Re: Extended BFs PP Question

  • If you nurse often, and especially lying down, your period can come back later. Didn't get mine back until about 20 months post partum.

  • it varies a lot from woman to woman. i went 12 months before my first PP period. i was working F/T and pumping, and DS reverse cycled to some degree and nursed a lot at night. i do think the overnight nursing has a big effect on delaying your return to fertility.

i would mention it to your doctor at your annual exam if you're concerned (or if you're thinking about TTC again soon)- but otherwise i would just enjoy it! ;)
  • DD is 22 months and I have not had a PP period yet. I have a friend that had hers after her child was 2. It is not common, but it is not a problem.
DD also nurses a lot and MOTN nurses, so this is probably a factor.

  • Yep, totally normal to not have one yet, especially if you are still nursing at night.  Mine didn't come back until around 14 months PP which was when I stopped pumping at work.  I think if I had kept pumping or was a SAHM and nursed during the day I'd still not have it since it's still somewhat irregular at 19 months PP.

  • Got my first pp AF when DD was 15.5 months old, was only nursing twice a day at that point.  Still nothing with DS and he is almost 16 months, I'm still nursing three sometimes four times a day with him.  I think if I keep it above two nursing sessions a day AF might stay away longer, dropping down to 2 seemed to be what triggered it with DD.
  • I EBF with into of solids at 6 months. We have consistently nursed overnight till this week. I got my period back 2 weeks to the day after starting solids.

  • I just started last Wednesday. It was no joke. :-( I was looking forward to not having one since I EBF.
  • I think it all depends on how often you are still nursing. Mine did not come back until 13 months PP when we dropped to 2 sessions per day.

We still nurse every 3 hours or more on weekends, 3 times plus 3 pumps during the week. In our case this wasn't true.

  • I got mine back at 16 months.

  • I wish I hadn't gotten a pp period yet! AF came back at 10 months with both my girls despite nursing A LOT. I do think it's normal for it not to come back while you're BFing.

Thank you for your responses everyone! I wasn't too concerned and I'm not ready to start TTC yet, so I'm okay waiting to see what happens.

eta: But I'm glad to hear it's not uncommon as I was a bit worried when someone suggested I see a doctor, so thank you for the feedback.

  • I'm jealous of a lot of you ladies!  I just got my period back a little over 3 weeks ago, DD is 7 months, she's EBF and we just started solids recently.
