I have two types of indoor composting. I have had my worm composting bin for 2 years now and my indoor bokashi compost kit for a month now.
I recycle.
I try to pick up the massive amounts of trash in the neighborhood.
I almost always bring reusable bags to the grocery. And in the even I don't have one, I make sure to reuse the bag for something else like cat litter or dog poo.
I never buy bottled water and have a sodastream for sparkling water. Reduces plastic waste by a lot.
I want to start bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, but we've been using the grocery bags instead of buying trash bags. It's worked well because we use 1 grocery bag for trash/day and it goes out at night.
What does parenting think? Would it be better for the earth if we started buying garbage bags, and using reusable bags at the grocery store?
I think it's a catch 22 really. And it's a cost saving move.
So personally, I see nothing wrong with what you are doing.
We recycle. We take reusable shopping bags to the grocery store. We use any plastic grocery bags we have to scoop out the litter box or pick up dog poop. I want to start composting. We also planted 6 trees over the weekend.
TTC since August 2011, Me = 40, DH = 38 Unexplained IF. Tried Clomid for 3 cycles. All BFNs. BFP 1/6/13. Chemical pregnancy.
Moving on to IVF#1. ER 11/26/13, 16 eggs retreived, 12 mature and all fertilized. 2 blasts transferred on 12/1. All other embies arrested so nothing left to freeze. Beta 12/10 = BFN. IVF #2 March 2014. BFP!!! TEAM BLUE!!!
My cousin tried to argue that you waste more water/electricity using cloth diapers, so it's not worth it.
What say ye parenting?
I say your cousin has never cloth diapered before.
Is she saying "worth it" from a financial perspective, or a conservation standpoint? On both counts I think she's wrong, but I've never done any actual research on it.
She is trying to argue that it's no better for the environment because when you cloth diaper, you use a lot of water and electricity.
I thought it was strange, but I have also never cloth diapered before. I have put a diaper on my dog once though. Just a regular one. LOL.
Not to mention the landfill footprint of disposables....(says a disposable using mom).
I guess that's how I feel. And not judging either way and I wasn't even judging her. She is just really into all natural and the environment and all that crap and then we got to talking about cloth diapers (my sister used them) and she was like "nope, they aren't really that great for the environment."
We use reusable grocery bags and if we forget them, we always reuse the plastic bags from the store. I recycle paper at work. We don't have a very convenient recycling system here in my town, so I don't do that. I should, though.
I live in Chicago and we just got recycling in the area a few years ago.
And I'm not even convinced that what I recycle is being recycled since the it's the same company that takes the trash.
I rarely buy bottled water. We cloth diaper. We recycle. We let yellow mellow (in the MOTN only). (Actually this started when DS was a newbie and I was terrified flushing the toilet would wake him up, but it still counts) I buy a lot of secondhand toys/clothes.
