Flying With 8 Month Old Twins

I know this has been covered, but I can't get the search function to work properly- keeps cutting off posts so I can only see part of them?

Next week, my DH and I are flying for the first time with our boys. We're going to hold them on the flights and I chose seats across the aisle from each other because I know we can't sit together with them. I'm wondering specifically about the logistics of getting them through the airport. We have a Baby Jogger City Mini GT, but I hate to lug that thing through the airport. Alternative option would be a single umbrella stroller and wearing one baby. I don't usually keep them in the Ergo for very long at a time so this makes me a little nervous, but seems a better option than the big stroller. For those of you that have traveled with twins, what worked for you?

Can I wear a baby through security or do I have to take him out of the carrier? Any suggestions or anything else I should know?

Re: Flying With 8 Month Old Twins

  • The times I've flown with the twins (at 2mos and 7.5, both cross country) we used a Moby and Ergo in the plane and DSNG for the airport. We had to bring car seats anyway and half the time we lucked out and were allowed to bring them on board due to an undersold flight. Whatever makes your life easiest really.

I've had mixed experience with baby wearing through security. They're supposed to let you, but some airports/agents don't. I can PM you/write a bunch more detailed travel tips tonight when I'm off mobile, just remind me. :)

  • You can use the ergo through security. They won't make you take a baby out, but they do a residue test on your hands. It's nbd. And I would say bring the big stroller, bc carrying a baby all day like that it exhausting. Plus, even if they end up in you ergo a lot, the stroller is great for holding everything else. Diaper bag, Food and drinks, etc. we used the same one and it was a life saver. I have done it with a umbrella stroller and my two older singletons, and if I didn't balance it right the stroller fell over. It was a pain in my ass. Do you plan on using the baby jogger at your destination either way? If so, then definatly use that one at airport. If not, maybe on the umbrella, less stuff to lug around on vacation.
Good luck!!! Hope this helps a little.

I've flown several times now with my little ones, at 6 months, 7 months, 9 months, and last week at 14 months. Until this last trip I used the DSNG in the airport and checked it at the gate with their car seats. That worked out great. We have a City Mini GT double but I wouldn't ever bring it on a plane- I'd be terrified of what the airlines would do to it and we can't afford to replace it. I would suggest having a bag (either large heavy plastic or a bag made for travel) for anything that you check at the gate or at the ticket counter- we didn't do that with our car seats the first time and they came back pretty dirty.

We brought two single umbrella strollers for this most recent trip and that worked out pretty well. A bit of a PIA when we had to wrestle with them at the gate, but otherwise it was fine. I don't know that I would have attempted a single umbrella with an Ergo- sometimes you just need a place to set both kids down.

    Good luck!

They don't do well in their car seats for long, so I don't want to attempt the DNSG, plus we have car seats we can borrow there so it seems unnecessary. The idea of doing two umbrellas is interesting, I could even abandon a cheap one at the airport without feeling bad if it didn't work out. I don't need a stroller once we get there, my cousin is loaning me one. I'm wishing I had the Maclaren double umbrella I've been lusting over. Perhaps this is justification for a purpose, but I'm afraid my husband will kill me if I come home with it:)

Thanks for this post - we are considering travel to CT in December for xmas and its good to read everyone's comments. My girls will be just a week shy of 1 years old.

MH will kill me too if I buy ANOTHER stroller, but yeah, wouldn't the Maclaren be perfect for travel ;)

  • I've just used the city mini to get them through the airport. I believe if you wear them, you have to take the carrier off to go through security.

  • I would bring the big stroller - you can check it at the gate and with the amount of stuff that you have to bring on the plane when you travel with babies, it will be nice to have yours and DH's hands free in the airport. Also think about whether you want to deal with crappy strollers at your destination.

I think you can carry your baby through security but not wear them. You will definitely need to get them out of the stroller.

Last time I flew, I was with DD, and I saw a guy getting on the plane carrying only a book. I wanted to cry I was so jealous :) Good luck!
