Ds's school bus issue but not at fault of bus staff

DS rides the school bus since we are so far out from the school, DH doesn't work and I don't go to work till the afternoons. (We live out in the country)

We are having a major issue with the bus, but it's not the staff or kids on the bus, it is other drivers.

Now everyone with common sense knows that it is a law that when I school bus is stopped, lights on, sign out that you have to stop. Well apparently some folks out here did not get that message. They fly right by the bus not even hitting their brakes. Speed limit is 55 (was dropped from 65) and for the most part many go 75/80.

I have contacted the sheriffs office and asked for more patrols for when the bus is out there (1 school for all grades 1 bus for all this road).

Is there anything else I can do? Maybe set up a camera on the bus to catch them/ fine them? County meeting?

What would you do?

  • When I lived in TN the school bus drivers would write down the plate numbers of people who did not stop but if they are going that fast the drivers probably can't get the numbers.  Have you asked the bus driver if they have a system for reporting drivers who don't stop? If they do, maybe you can collect the plate numbers and hand them to the bus driver.  You can also petition to see if the county will put up a sign that indicates that it is a bus stop/children crossing if there is not one already there.

We have to signs for school bus stops but it seems like it does no good, there is a bus monitor (due to younger ones on the bus that has been getting off the bus and helping the kiddos but I fear for them all.

I am thinking of getting something going, like a petition to get cameras on the bus. This is the only bus that really has this problem for the district. (We are very small), This part of the hwy is not patrolled enough and people know that and fly down it. The accidents/ motor vehicles deaths are the big reason the speed limit was lowered but still not much of a police/deputy presence to scare them.

  • Assholes. I'd push for cameras or something.

Who is stupid and careless enough to do that?!

Ottawa has just started a campaign about this issue and will pilot a bus stop sign arm camera to catch people who drive past. https://m.schoolbusfleet.com/news/5128/stop-arm-awareness-campaign-launched-in-ontario

    Excerpt
“I called [Ottawa City Councillor] Stephen Blais in December, and he has been amazing,” Both said. “He went to Safer Roads Ottawa, and they did a blitz in January; they issued 200 tickets to people passing stopped school buses.”

(Safer Roads Ottawa works to prevent road deaths and serious injuries for all people in the city.)

Upon Both’s request, Blais also worked with city officials for approval of “I Stop, You Stop” road safety signs that were posted in areas throughout the city in April reminding motorists to stop for school buses.

“We can all agree that there is never an excuse for passing a school bus whose stop arm is out,” Blais said. “This is an egregious traffic violation that puts the lives of our children at risk.”

In addition, M.L. Bradley is participating in a stop-arm camera pilot program. A system from Seon is being installed on one of the company’s buses that travels on a route with a significant number of stop-arm violations.

  • I would go to a county board meeting and also start a social media campaign. Cameras on the bus or at the bus stop might help, but will be expensive.
