Weight gain support!!!

Having a really hard time with weight gain! I am 20 weeks and 2 days and gained 20lbs so far at least since last doctors apt! Probably more since! I lost originally about 150lbs and kept off for about 5 years. Started at 125 before pg and now im having a hard time getting a grip on my big self again! Is 20lbs so far out of control or others gain close to this at 20weeks? Maybe im just having a moment! Im so happy about my little girl i just wish my belly looked pregnant so i felt less fat! :(

Re: Weight gain support!!!

  • I'm in the same boat. I lost about 150lbs 3 years prior to pregnancy and was still losing when I found out I was pregnant. I'm up about 18 pounds now and my doctor says she is not worried but I am since I am 20 weeks I know the weight gain is only going to continue. My biggest issue is that I am ALWAYS hungry now and I'm not making good food choices (damn Easter candy). Does you doctor comment on your weight gain at all? It doesn't help that I also teeter on the "eating disorder" line so I'm trying really hard to put the scale away and just start eating healthier. I keep telling myself that I need to eat for our little baby but I can't say no to all the bad choices!!

  • Same on the ED line... Probably why why its extra tough i keep
Getting glimpses of my old self in the mirror :/ Doc wasnt concerned even though i had a big jump in 3 weeks yikes! He mentioned it and said it will slow down at the end because i wont be as hungry when the baby is pushing on my stomach. So we will see! Just trying to be positive and keep eating like i am (vegetarian and trying to eat well)! :)) its all for our babies! Ty!!! <3 always feels better to know im not alone:)))) i just need to stop complaining as much lol
  • I stepped on the scale this morning and was not pleased. I have been eating really healthy and I didn't think too much, just when i'm hungry. Been staying active and just recently started showing (last week) but good lord it went from DH and I were the only ones that could really tell at 17 weeks to holy cow i'm def pregnant. I like watching my belly grow but i feel like everything is startnig to grow too fast and not gradual or at least thats what the scale and my hips are saying....

If i could cut out sweets then maybe I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I'm just over 17 weeks and gained 10 lbs. over the past three weeks tho 8 of those lbs were gained and I have no clue how! I've been eating the same as prior to being preg. I'm just trying to enjoy being preg and embrasing my new curves (aka big ass, hips, thighs) eek!! Try to stay positive!!

10 lbs is right in how many you're should have gained... Look at one of the many pregnancy weight gain charts...

  • I lost 75 pounds prior to becoming pregnant. As soon as I got the BFP, I set weight gain goals. I still count calories, but I count to gain a healthy amount (different than dieting). I just didn't want to deal with gaining too much. I know I can easily turn back to constantly overeating. I eat the same way I did before plus about 300 calories a day now, which is what is recommended in 2nd and 3rd tri. At 21 weeks, I've gained 8 lbs.

I understand women being supportive and saying not to worry, but it's not good for you or the baby if you gain way too much either. Do your best to make healthy choices. We're eating for two, but one of the two of us only weighs about a pound right now. That's what I say to family who push fatty junk foods in front of me anyway and insist I'm eating for two.

Honestly, the old standby line that "if your doctor isn't concerned about weight gain, then you shouldn't be" is in my opinion how women end up gaining an excessive amount of weight that has years of effect and can ultimately effect how women feel about pregnancy, childbirth, infancy and beyond.

Through years on these boards I've heard women say "Don't be so obsessive," "Don't worry about weight gain," or worse yet "I gained 70+ lbs and my doctor never said anything to me, so you shouldn't be concerned."

I have friends who gained 70+ and wonder why their doctors didn't say something to them! And really, unless they were somehow gauging their mental stability, why didn't they?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with channeling the focus of your pregnancy on being healthy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to not gain over your recommended gain. Doctors are not gods and they may not express a concern, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't exist, the guidelines are there for a reason.

Eat healthy. Stay active. Be focused, but don't obsess. It'll all work out.

And for what it's worth, you're expected to gain 1/2-1 lb a week the last 12 weeks, so I have no idea why a doctor would suggest that weight gain would slow down. It's really when you most steadily put on weight.

ETA: The time really is now to get a handle on what is being consumed or establishing healthy routines, regardless of if your OB is saying something or not. If they say something in 3rd tri, there's not much that can be done, as you want that healthy 1/2-1 lb gain!

  • I called my sister yesterday in tears about my 20lbs I had gained. I weigh the most now then I ever have. I know it's all normal but my emotions are all over the place! She reassured me that you gain weight differently throughout the pregnancy depending on the growth spurts of your baby. Since I am exercising she just encouraged me to make healthier food choices and eat more protein. I know how you all feel though. I've been wanting to be a mom for a couple years now and now that it's happening I'm freaking out. I am just taking one day at a time.

  • I've put on about 15lbs at 20 weeks. My doctor hasn't said anything. It's stressful to see the numbers climb when you're so used to worrying about your weight, but try not to get on the scale. Instead focus on getting healthy foods and exercising when you can.
  • I've gained 14 pounds, but as a lifetime dieter and plus sized lady, it's extremely stressful. I am trying to eat right and stress less, but I can completely understand how easy it is to obssess over the scale.
  • I agree, it's tough. I lost 60lbs and maintained about 1 year before BFP on a very low carb diet. The only things I could tolerate in the 1st tri were cereal, crackers and bread and some fruit. So, I gained a lot of weight right away. Now I'm doing better since my nausea is gone and my appetite is back to normal. My MFM said too much weight is not good for mom or baby. Higher risk of GD, varicose veins, Hemorrhoids, it makes exercise more difficult, makes mom less Less likely to want to exercise. She told me just to make good choices in terms of carbs (fruit instead of ice cream) and continue to exercise.

  • I understand. I've also gained almost twenty pounds since my BFP. I was on WW when I found out I was pregnant, and was still working on my weight-loss. It's been really hard to transition from a weight loss "diet" to a "pregnant" diet, and obviously, I'm not doing great. I had GD the first time, and it was hard emotionally. I'm worried I'm increasing my odds of having it this time by gaining too quickly, but I can't seem to get it under control. I eat healthy, and work-out everyday.

However, I'll focus on eating healthy and on staying active, and hopefully the gain will slow down.

  • Thanks so much for the positive messages and for thise in the same boat! Xoxoxoxoxo :x
  • @cccashley‌ I'm at the same place you are. After all the hard work, it's difficult watching the scale go up...but in the end I know my body's gonna do what it's gonna do. And it helps knowing that I've made the best decisions that I can for both me and the baby

  • I'm another one who lost a great deal of weight years ago - then gained abotu half of it back prior to my last pregnancy.  I had moderate weight gain during my last pregnancy, but it was hard to reprogram my brain to NOT count calories (points) or worry about the things that I'd been worrying about for so long...

The good news is that it came off (for me) really fast, with breastfeeding and just generally my new life as a mom.  I lost it all plus about 20 lbs by the time I went back to work.  Gaining a little bit faster this second time around, but am hopeful for a similar situation post baby.

You know what to do to lose weight. It won't happen overnight, but you certainyl know how to work a program and stay disciplined!  It will all be fine!
