Breastfeeding/bottle/pumping question

I know we have separate threads for these topics but wasn't sure where to post it to get the best answer so hoping no one minds me posting a separate thread!
If I bottle feed during the day and don't pump, I know this will affect my supply. However, if I continue breastfeeding at night, will my daytime routine affect my nighttime output?
Also, if I leave LO overnight with my mother one night (we have a wedding) and I don't breastfeeding overnight for 3 feedings, how will that affect my supply?
Thanks for your help!

Re: Breastfeeding/bottle/pumping question

  • If you go three feedings without pumping or feeding you will be outrageously uncomfortable and probably end up with a plugged duct and mastitis, which will affect your supply, yes. Down the road you maybe able to bottle feed during the day and bf at night without it hurting your supply, but probably not for months until your supply is really established. Really any regular formula supplementing in the first few months canbe very detrimental to milk supply unless you're very careful.

  • Thanks Rachel! I was assuming it wouldn't be a good option. However, I've been giving her 3 bottles during the day and haven't been uncomfortable..are plugged ducts and mastitis something that occurs over time?
I've just been so overwhelmed with pumping and BF and finally seem to have found a good balance for us but don't want to ruin the routine we have now..

  • If you go too long without draining your breasts (by either feeding or pumping) you're likely to get engorged, and engorgement leads to plugged ducts, and plugged ducts lead to mastitis.  I don't know what to say about what you're doing during the day.  Maybe you're just lucky or maybe you already aren't making much milk or are only making milk when you need it.

  • Can I ask why you aren't breastfeeding during the day? That seems super inconvenient to me but I hate doing dishes so hey.

I actually don't mind washing the bottles.. It's more so in case I have errands to run and need her to stay with DH or my mom etc someone else can feed her. We also made the decision to start slowly introducing formula so id rather do that during the day than overnight.
I'd still like to keep breastfeeding at night though which is why I asked if this would mess up my supply. Based on your answers it probably will so im going to need to figure something out.
