Start buying stuff or wait??

My fiancé says it's too early to buy baby stuff, but I can't help but want to buy things for the baby. I haven't bought anything but it's always on my mind that we should get this or get that... My due dates in Oct.24 but it be nice just to get everything out of the way before baby gets here, right?

Re: Start buying stuff or wait??

  • Not too early but I am going to hold back myself. 1.) we have nowhere to put it yet. 2.) we will probably get many gifts and I want to wait to buy what we need.

  • I think it definitely depends on what you're comfortable doing, I find a few onsies here and there that are cute and gender neutral and some of them "I NEED", but I think I'm holding off on buying bigger items until after my shower, then I know what I need to add to the collection.
  • I would wait because you don't know what you'll get from your shower.
Maybe keep your eye out for deals on big things like the travel system, crib and swing if you're going to plan on buying them yourself.
I'm all sorts of frugal, so when I find great deals on stuff I know we'll need I snag it. Especially things like crib sheets, gender neutral onesies/sleep n plays, baby wash cloths, wipes, and diapers.
Also, those newborn open bottom nightgowns were a life saver!

  • With our first, we bought the crib and nursery furniture when I was around 18 weeks. We bought a few outfits after finding out the sex, but for the most part we didn't buy much until after our shower. We didn't NEED much after our shower :) Whatever you are comfortable with...always save receipts!

  • I've already gone to a huge baby consignment convention with my mom about a month ago. It was an invitation only event and she got free tickets. We bought a bunch of stuff. I got a super deluxe exercise saucer, a bunch of toys, maternity shirts (they were like $3-5 a piece!), a nice convertible newborn/baby bathtub for $10, and a bunch of stuff I already forgot I bought, haha! I didn't get baby clothes or anything that was sex specific, though. I baby sit for a 5 month old one day a week so I got stuff that he could play with now.  My sis-in-law's good friend is going to be having a big, "no more babies for us" baby stuff clear out sometime towards the end of May. They're going to let us have first dibs on whatever we need before the sale. There are a few things I want new, but I'm fine with used toys, a nice swing, pack-n-play, and maybe a changing table. They haven't set the date yet, but if they have it after May 20th, we'll know our baby's sex and I'll be down for buying clothes after that. If I can get stuff for cheap, I'm all about it! Whatever we don't get there, we'll register for later.
  • I've only bought 1 item of baby clothing; my parents and friends have already started buying me whatever cute things they see. I'm fine with it, I'm just not washing anything or taking off any tags. If I see a sale or get good coupons, though, I'll start stocking up early - like on furniture, maaaaybe diapers. But mostly I'm putting it off until I feel more panicked about getting everything ready, lol.

  • I had crib sheets, some toys, books and changing pad cover from my last pregnancy. We decided to stay with our original idea for nursery colors so all that will work.

This time I have gotten a few books, cute onsies, an elephant rocker (DH had to have) and a change pad that fits the cover. I also got one cloth diaper cover and pads to do a diaper demo for my mother. We are just buying things as we want to and if they are a good deal. We will likely order the furniture soon.

After our still birth I just want to live in the moment and be excited and not scared.

So far, we bought the dressers, our main stroller, and a few linens. The only reason we have the stroller is because we found it on close out for last years colors. However, we are going to a consignment sale next weekend and will probably pick up more. Most people in my friends/family buy small stuff or clothing for showers.

  • If you buy now, you'll miss out on the new stuff they release in stores for fall this summer. ;) I am going to do most of my shopping in August and September.

  • We bought the crib and car seat/stroller. Both were on sale and we saved about $350. We also started buying gift cards as a substitute for stocking up on diapers. This way we have the money set aside but won't have to worry about returning diapers if they don't work for LO.
  • I've bought a couple little things here and there.. but I did buy my travel system the other day because I got it for $85 at target out the door! :) love me a good deal.. and if anything happens, I'd just take it back or sell it I guess.. :) but im not gonna be stuck on what if anymore.

If anything is on Super sale we will buy it. Diapers, wipes, things of that nature we will purchase and stock up on.
  • I am moving next week and once I get settled in is when I plan to start shopping.. I can't wait!
  • Make sure if you are buying stuff and saving receipts that you know the return policy too.  Things like furniture you aren't likely to get at a shower unless you have some really generous friends and family so if you find a good deal I say go for it.  Smaller things, I would wait honestly.  You will get so much at a shower (or two) that you will be overwhelmed!

I disagree with stocking up on diapers though, even if they are on sale, because you can't know what will work for your LO.  We tried many brands on DD before we settled on one.

  • I have purchased exactly two things. A neutral swaddleme set and a set of A&A swaddle blankets. Both were killer deals from Amazon. I have a bunch of things already so my list is super small (baby #3). I'll probably wait a while still for anything else.

  • I just started thinking about things and it has me excited! I'm trying to hold off and just window shop online right now. Making a list and researching things is helping me not buy quite yet.

  • There's no right answer. I'm a big fan of thrift-store shopping. It feels indulgent to buy stuff but I don't have to hem and haw over whether or not to spend the money, or whether I'll really use the item.

I have a small pile of recently-bought (from a thrift shop) newborn clothes on my bedside table, plus a little wood and cloth Haba sheep, and those things help make this pregnancy real for me. Yes, I sometimes hold up the tiny Gap pants with the whale embroidered on the bum and feel that little warmth in my heart. And I'm not gonna lie: I have kissed the sheep. Do what feels right!

  • I'm excited, and I've bought little things here and there.

I bought a cute baby bag, some gender neutral swaddle and receiving blankets, burp cloths, and some cute onesies that I couldn't resist.

Will I get all of this at my shower and more? Of course. But I'm a FTM who was told I was lucky to be pregnant so I'm basking in this miracle situation :)
  • I just bought my first pack of diapers last week.  :)  I'm working on buying one pack everytime I go to the store, so that I can have a little stock.  And when we were on vacation I bought a onsie from senor frogs, because it was so stinking cute!  But that's it.  Once we find out what Nemo is, I'm sure my mom and I will go on a shopping spree!

  • I'm a planner and since I've hit 14 weeks and the greatest time of risk has passed, I have started researching and shopping. The researching had held me off for a week or so but then I began purchasing big items that I wouldn't expect someone to buy for us; such as the crib and dresser.
  • We have been buying things for a couple weeks now. This is our second, so we already have furniture and stuff like that. We find out this weekend if we have a boy or girl, so we will start some shopping after that!

  • We've boughten a lot, and started during our last pregnancy. We bought all the big items we wouldn't expect to get at the shower: glider, crib, dresser, stroller with infant seat, and I also started my cloth diaper collection. Everything I have boughten I have gotten ridiculously good deals on. Starting early and figuring out what I want has allowed me to buy slowly and wait for deals. For example, I got my dresser and crib, which is $1250 for $518. I got an awesome deal on a BOB and got the infant car seat free with it, $450 glider for $250. But do what works for you!!

  • It all comes down to personal preference. For me, it's still too early. DS2 won't be moved out of his room until sometime this summer and I don't want the added clutter around the house in the meantime.

  • I've been buying gender neutral clothing and once I find out the sex I might get a couple more sex specific clothing items. Besides that I've just been getting things that I know I'm not going to put on my registry and we will get all of the things for the nursery. It's really up to you. There nothing wrong with buying a few items if that's what makes you happy.

    Anniversary

  • I'm due October 23, the day before you, and I've bought a few fun things, unisex onesies and stuff, but right now I'm researching products to keep me from buying stuff right away. Researching strollers, cribs, pumps, etc.

  • We find out the sex on Friday and can't wait to start buying a few things....nothing major. I'm sure my mom and dad are going to go crazy after we tell them--it's their first grandchild and my mom is already itching to buy Little English clothes and monogram everything. HAHA

The only thing we purchased was 2 baby books this weekend. :) I'm holding off on major purchases until July/August, but if my parents want to go ahead and buy stuff I won't say no.

  • I just bought a wooden high chair that I found at a consignment shop because I knew that was something I wanted but couldn't register for. Other than that, I think we're going to hold off on buying much stuff until after the shower.
