LO not gaining weight

I am breastfeeding and LO latches well. I nurse about every 2 hours.. she usually falls asleep during a feeding so I sometimes only get one side done and then try to pump the other. I thought for sure at her Dr. appt today she would have gained but she only gained 1/2 oz. They want me to call a Lactation Consultant.. but was wondering if anyone on here had any ideas since they only work until 5:00 and it's past that now.

they are going to tell you to nurse more often and try to rouse her (maybe by burping her) between breasts. crying is a late hunger cue, so if you're waiting until she cries then she is already too hungry to get in a good feed. waiting too long could also explain the falling asleep at the breast. you can try pumping/hand expressing a little at the beginning of the feed to get to the fattier hind milk faster. comfort nursing is also a great way to get more in. i'm assuming you're nursing at least every two hours all night, too. keep up the nursing at night, even if you have to wake her.

also, just know that bf babies gain slower sometimes. it could be nothing at all. most pedis allow weight checks without a co-pay or scheduled office visit. feed her like crazy for a few days then take her in for a check before you call the LC.

How old is LO? DD2 was at the same exact weight for a few days before she started gaining.

11 days old-- I've been waking her to eat every 2 hours. It's exhausting! And a little frustrating now that she hadn't gained...

Her diapers are good! 6-8 wets a day. 2 poops today actually. She did have a poop right before her appt. It was not the same scale.. but she was stripped down. I'm going to try to wake her in between feedings to switch her to the other breast (she tends to fall asleep while feeding on one side). I'll continue to feed every 2 hours...honestly I was shocked she hadn't gained much. I am feeling like a feeding machine these days.

But wait. Was she up a 1/2 oz from birth weight, or from her decreased weight when you left the hospital?

DD1 was a very slow gainer and lost 23% of her body weight. She went from the 98% to the 20% where she has stayed to this day. She is now a happy healthy skinny 23month old.

Try changing her between breasts to wake her up that works for us. I wouldn't stress to much if she is wetting a good amount of diapers. Our first weigh in at 4 days PP LO had only gained about 20g from her discharge weight, the nurse came back a day and a half later and she had gained 60g more (normal is about 15g per day) so she may catch up!

I wouldn't worry. What was starting weight? What's wright now? My second was a very slow gainer. I learned from dd1 not to supplement. Let your body do what it's supposed to do. Just nurse nurse nurse. Drink lots of water and stay stress free. I know hard but lo will be fine.

Try to use same scale. My 4 days old appt LO had gained 2 oz. at a week she was down 1 oz from previous with different scale. On her 11 day appt she was up 8 oz on the same scale as her 4 day appt. Scales can weight differently.

@Kriztyn‌ often they fall asleep when the flow slows after a let down. Use compressions and massage to encourage another let down. This will also help her get more fatty hind milk which helps with weight gain. Good luck!

You can do some breast compressions, too. Both while she's actively nursing and then once she starts to get sleepy. They can eat in their sleep and sometimes the breast compressions can help keep them interested and eating longer. Basically just use the flats of your fingers to press down and towards the nipple.
