Engorgement - 3 day old

My milk came in yesterday and by the afternoon I was crazy engorged on the one side when my son finally went 3 hours between feedings (he had been nursing every 1.5 to 2 hours). Today both sides are unbearably engorged. He never empties my breast when he feeds. It feels a bit emptier, but still super full. Any advice? I want to stay away from the pump. How long will this last? I totally forget from DD.

  • I pumped to relieve engorgment. You can freeze the milk for later emergency need. Other things I've read to do are take warm shower and manually express milk for relief. Avent also makes breast shell things that have vents you can wear in your bra to air them out and collect dripping milk.

  • A warm shower with a bit of breast massage does wonders. The engorgement will ease as your body adjusts.

It gets better soon! I thought something was seriously wrong because of how bad the engorgment felt but I swear it will get better quickly and then not be so uncomfortable. I wouldn't pump, just warm shower and if needed self express a bit. I just kept offering to baby and have her eat! My nurse also recommended ibuprofen and hot/cold compress.

Agree with this. I started to take a bar of soap and massage my breasts with it in the shower in a circular motion -- helped a bit. Also helpful: Earth Mama Angel Baby booby tubes -- all natural, and you can freeze them or heat them up depending on what you need. I slept with them in my bra straight out of the freezer in the beginning.

The engorgement will definitely ease with time. Offer the breast to your LO often and I would also stay away from the pump so you don't create an oversupply. Your baby will determine your supply based on what he/she needs.

    GL!
  • What I've been told is when your milk first comes in, your body just makes as much milk as it can. Your supply is regulated by what the baby needs, so I definitely agree (and from experience) the pump will just prolong and possibly worsen the engorgement. It should get better in the next few days :)
