Update on my breech baby

Well I went in to the hospital today for the ECV and after having LO monitored and then having an ultrasound it was determined that I was not a candidate for ECV. LO is measuring in the 97th percentile for everything (wow!) and they are estimating her to be 8.10 lbs at 37 + 1. Also placenta is anterior and fluid was low. This along with being Frank breech meant that the doc did jot recommend going ahead. I will now be booked for a c section at 39 weeks. Still trying to process that I won't have the natural birth that I had planned for. Vaginal breech birth is not an option due to size. However, all I want is a healthy baby so I guess this is my journey. Can any STM's advise on the accuracy of their growth scan?

Re: Update on my breech baby

  • Growth scans can be off in either direction.

Since you are having a csection for a breech baby, you will be a great candidate for a vbac if that is what you want for the next one.

Maybe baby will flip on it's own before that. Either way lots of luck!

  • No advice here, but I have a breech baby too. 35w4d today. I've tried acupuncture, and we will try ECV in a week or so. I'm still hopeful. I can totally relate to your disappointment. I also wanted a natural birth, so it's been difficult coming to terms with the fact that I may be scheduled for a section at 39 weeks. But....healthy babies are what's important! Here's hoping these LOs turn!

I completely feel for you- I am currently headed down the same road with my ECV scheduled for 37.5 weeks but today she was measuring large especially her head and has been frank breech since our anatomy scan at 17 weeks. I am also high risk so either I will be induced or scheduling a c section between 39-40 weeks regardless. I am currently processig through the possibility of losing my natural birth plans and researching c sections and what they are calling "natural c sections" where you still can get immediate skin to skin and watch them pull her out etc has helped a lot. I am still doing all my spinning babies moves and going to the chiropractor but I am losing hope. But like @rainyduyluck said request double sutures and you should be a good VBAC candidate if you want another one. That is my plan.

ETA- at this stage your measurements can be off by up to 1-2 pounds from what I understand

  • Thanks ladies! I'll continue with my spinning babies attempts to turn her...however I'm not too hopeful now after the whole lack of fluid, frank breech, overall size etc. I have made peace with the idea that a c section will probably go ahead and my idea of a natural birth is most likely not going to happen, however I am remaining optimistic and feel LO will do whatever she feels she should in order to arrive safely in my arms. If the c section goes ahead I will definitely be requesting double sutures as would love for a VBAC next time around. I am quite fortunate in that my hospital (in Australia) has a very strong view about immediate skin to skin, even with a c section and have been told LO will (health permitting) be placed on my chest while they stitch me up. I will also liekly stay in recovery for up to an hour where I should be able to attempt to breast feed LO. So that is something :) hopefully you other breech mummas have a more successful time with ECV and your LO's head down!
  • I was exactly in your shoes- big baby, anterior placenta, breech! My baby turned at 37.5 weeks, so I ended up being induced at 40 weeks because of her supposed large size and my pre-existing diabetes. I still ended up with a c-section, and it was fine. As much as I planned for a "natural" birth, I am fine with how it went, and am having a RCS with no doubts. I am just glad I can avoid the 21 hours of induction with no epidural this time. It sounds like you will also get to avoid that, too. If you aren't going to deliver vaginally, I would be happy to at least make the surgery easier on yourself!

Acupuncture flipped my LO, for the record!
