Breastfeeding

Help with my supply please

With my first son my milk never came in so this time I had no plan to breastfeed. At 35w6d my wonderful Noah was delivered via emergency c-section due to severe pre e. Since Noah is in the NICU I have been doing everything I could to get as much breast milk to him as possible but even pumping every 2-3 hours I only make about half an ounce total each pumping session. I have milk maid tea and all that really does is taste kinda gross and make me cramp painfully. I would really appreciate any help

Re: Help with my supply please

  • His feeding tube makes nursing pretty hard. We do skin to skin when I can get to the NICU we have a toddler already so its challanging to go between Frederick where we live and Hopkins where Noah is. Noah is 10 days old I think my milk should be in by now. I am pumping for 20 minutes at a time. The NICU is giving him an ounce and a half every 3 hours.

  • Are you having a hard time getting a letdown? You can try skin to skin with your toddler (if you are both comfortable with that) and/or holding a blanket or hat Noah has worn.

You should have access to a lactation consultant in the hospital, and can also search for independent IBCLCs in your area. Other possible sources of help could be local leaders from La Leche League or from a doula (some assist with postpartum issues as well as acting as birthing coaches).

  • i had an emergency c section after 24 hrs of labor and had a hard time with my milk production for the first couple of days. My pedi recommended taking fenugreek in the supplement form and my supply improved alot.

Congratulations!  How old is Noah now?  He might only need .5 ounces at the moment, depending on how old he is.  Has your milk even come in yet?

First things first - it is super important to stay hydrated (you need about 25 or so ounces more water than normal, and you normally need about 64 ounces a day) and eat enough.  That's just the basics for making milk - it takes liquid and it takes calories.

Second, you should be pumping every two hours during the day and every 3 overnight.  How long do you pump for?  Maybe try going 5 minutes longer to signal your body to make more.

I have the Milkmaid tea as well; it sure does stink, but I don't think it actually tastes like anything.  I also suspect the cramping is not from the tea; your uterus is still shrinking back to its normal size, which does feel like bad period cramps.

I think you're doing just fine.  Are you able to nurse Noah at all?  That alone - the skin to skin, the hormones - should help you produce more.

This!  I had a tough time with my milk coming in while I was in the hospital (I had an emergency C/S as well) did everything Sing listed...  Drinking lots of water, feeding LO on demand and pumping helped bring in my supply.  In fact, it did too good of a job because it lead to an oversupply problem.

    Congrats and best of luck!!
