Those who went through IF treatment...

The thread about knowing when your done with having kids got me wondering about those of us who had to go through IF tx to have our LOs, if and when you plan on having another.

I saw that a couple replied in the other thread but those who want another kid, what are you thinking about if and when to start IF tx?

DH and I want a sibling for LO and haven't yet developed a timeline, but I don't think we will wait too long. DH will turn 40 next January and I don't want him to be too much older if at all possible. I have a few years before I hit AMA status though. We know we can't have a kid without treatment. Going through IF tx is hard though and I'm not looking forward to that again!

  • We aren't sure yet. We don't have any embryos, just eggs. We got so very blessed with the one miracle embryo and on the first try. I'm not sure I can emotionally go through all of that again. And I really don't know if I could love another child as much as I do DS.

And then there's the money aspect. I finally added up our IVF expenses and it was over 20k!! I'm not working anymore, so I really don't know if we could afford it again.

  • We conceived after 3 years and a few unsuccessful medicated cycles during a tx break; I'm AMA, so there is less time to decide.

We are both thrilled with our daughter and parenthood, so I could see that joy taking us either way: we might decide to go for it again or revel in our one.

We know we will need to revisit this conversation over the next year, but I think we will probably not pursue treatments, both for cost and like you mentioned @jfb29, it is hard: emotionally, physically, and logistically. And before, we weren't taking care of a little one.

I'm sort of eager to see how I feel in a few months and then a year or so!

AMA & SAIF. TTC #1 since Oct. 2010. DX: Unexplained. BFP on break after 32 months trying and 2 med cycles. Baby girl born at 40w0d!

  • We did IVF with DS1 (only got 1 embryo) so had to do another full round this time. We got 7 embryos this time. Implanted one and didn't get pg, then implanted two and had the twins, so we have four left frozen.
I'm not sure if we'll try to have another, but it will be much easier not to have to go through the whole process again!

  • I'm not sure what we are going to do. We used up all of our fertility insurance maximum so anything we do will be out of pocket. I had 2 frozen embryos but unfortunately our fresh cycle was a miscarriage and then we put both frozen in this last time and ended up with DS. So, we are out of frozen and would be starting from scratch. I am also 34 now.

I think we will try for a year on our own and if it doesn't happen we may be one and done :( I have always said I didn't want to have an only child.

  • I think we'll try again starting when LO is about a year. We had unexplained IF issues... every test came back normal. We ended up doing IUI, and thankfully it worked on the first try. We're going to try to get pregnant again without intervention, then we know we can do treatment if needed. I figure we'll start trying as soon as we're both ready, and if it's quick, that's great, but if it's a process, it still won't be too long between kids.

Thanks for sharing ladies! Those of you who went through IVF - you are strong ladies! DH and I were on our last cycle bc our RE said we needed to do IVF. I'm glad it worked out for us bc we had decided IVF wasn't for us - it would have been too difficult physically and emotionally. Wish you all the best!

  • Just throwing it out there - a pregnancy is the best "cure" for infertility in a lot of cases!

I have PCOS. I took 2 years to TTC. I did clomid, injects and an IUI with no pregnancy. I finally got PG with my twins on our 2nd round of IUI with injects.

Fast forward 2 years. DH and I decide we'll "give it a whirl" and if it's meant to be, it would happen. We knew we were very blessed to have twins so we were laid back about it. We knew we did NOT want to go back to the RE (one set of twins is enough!).

I got pregnancy with #3 naturally our 1st month 'trying', LOL!!!! You honestly never know. I really didn't think I'd get pregnant without help.

  • We still have 4 frozen embryos left and do eventually want a sibling for our LO. Would not consider doing any treatments for at least a year or two though. However, we are not using birth control now, and if there is a small chance that my PCOS was helped by this pregnancy (I have heard that can happen), we would be happy with a natural conception in the meantime.

@Kristen61607‌ - that is very true that pregnancy can help with issues like PCOS. I hope it helps mine for sure (and everyone else). Unfortunately with DH's issue we will still have to do some form if treatment - wish we didn't though! I'm glad you and your husband were able to forgo tx for #3 though!

  • We're definitely not done!!! We did IUI with ds to conceive the twins. We have 4 vials left. I'm terrified to have pprom again with hospital bed rest. I don't know how that would work with 2 at home now! So I'm thinking we'll try when the twins are at least 2.

This. It took well over a year on meds to treat my PCOS to get pg with DD1. After she was born, we were NTNP, because we figured I'd need some medical intervention to get pg again. Nope. And that is how I now have 2 kiddos under 18 months :)
