Thrush help

I need some help/tips for beating thrush.  My 13month old has had it for a good 3 months.  We treated with 10days of the nystatin (sp?) at the beginning of the month and she still has it.  She has the white in the mouth and now the diaper rash.  She's transferred it back to me :-(

We saw the doc today and got a prescription for 14days of oral nystatin and a prescription for me to apply to the nipples (antifungal/antibiotic/pain reliever and some 4th compound).  I had our doctor look at it a couple months ago and he said it likely wasn't thrush as it isn't common at this age and said not to worry it was likely just residue from something she's been eating.  I got fed up with it and saw a different doctor who said it was thrush and gave the 10days of meds.  I then brought her back to the first doctor (our reg doc) and he gave the 14days of meds and meds for me and said if that doesn't work we'll use something stronger.  He tends to be the type to try less meds or gentler meds before trying stronger meds...which I can appreciate.  BUT...I really want this gone!

What all can we do to beat this?  I will do the oral meds 4x a day after nursing.  I will do the monistat cream on diaper.  How often?  When do I stop?

What else can I do to help?  Sterilize all our toys?  How often?  She uses a soother for naps...boil it?  How often?

She is highly dairy intolerant still (so I can't have any either) so we can't have yogurt to help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  She is usually in cloth diapers.  She hasn't been in them for a good month.  I bleached them then did a sterilizing cycle on the washer.  They should be good to use...but will hold off until we have the yeast under control to ensure that it's not in there transferring it back.

I would realllllly like to get rid of this yeast once and for all.

You need to sterilize everything. Pacifiers, sippies/bottles, toys. Try to switch out pacifiers as much as possible. I boiled them all each night so I had about 10 ready to go in the morning and just grabbed a new one every so often throughout the day.

Wash your bras with hot water and change nursing pads multiple times a day.

I was on and off meds for a few months like you. What finally got rid of it was gentian violet. I put it in baby's mouth and on my breasts. The thrush was gone after a few days and never came back. It is a little messy but so worth it. I put some olive oil around the outside of his mouth to keep it from turning too purple.

Do you think running toys through the dishwasher is enough to sterilize them?  That's how I typically clean them (placing them all in mesh bags and running a cycle of just toys).   If not how do you sterilize them?

I will look into the gentian violet.  I don't know much about it but will research it a bit.  How long does it stain the mouth for?

  • Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.  It is the Newman cream I received.  I never thought to use vinegar in the dishwasher, that's great!

  • I just wanted to say about the yogurt thing, you can just buy probiotics in pill form so you don't have to eat yogurt. You can get them at any drug store. Good luck!

  • Another vote for gentian violet. It IS messy; I had one shirt for DD to wear when I was applying it (in case of drool - she was younger than your LO). It was the only thing that cleared us both up.

I boiled things in a vinegar/water solution - thrush is persistent! I didn't run things through the dishwasher, but I'm guessing it would work too.

    Good luck!
  • Sorry to hear you are struggling with this- it really is frustrating! I had symptoms and had to do x14 days of diflucan to get rid of it as topical didn't work. Fingers crossed it's finally gone for me! The LC I saw suggested the following; using a new bath towel each day, use paper towels for hand washing, wipe nipples clean with water and air dry after each feeding, sanitize anything that touches breast milk ( I used microwave bags), wash all laundry with hot water (I dried everything on high heat), and replace pacifiers and bottle nipples frequently. I know this meant lots of laundry but I was also so eager to get rid if it . Good luck!
