June 2014 Moms

Mommas with pets, question.

I have two sweet dogs. A boxer and a Boston Terrier. They are usually very well behaved but over the past two weeks they have been terrible. Peeing in the house, getting in the trash, jumping on our furniture. I don't recall them acting like this near the end of my last pregnancy. Do you think pets know something is happening? Are you having this issue? It's driving me nuts!

Re: Mommas with pets, question.

  • My dog started doing this last year when I was pregnant and it turned out to be separation anxiety. Sounds silly but google it and you'll get some good tips on how to tell if that is the case and what to do if it is. GL.

Oh yes! My Jack Russell goes through spurts of bad behaviour, biggest issue being he decides that what I say doesn't matter. He's been doing it off and on since I was about 10 weeks. Whereas as our Beagle who doesn't like to be touched usually is all over me and cuddling every chance she gets. They all act differently to the changes. I read that they are adjusting to the changes in your smell, they will get used to it and realize that you are still you. don't let them off the hook at the time...stick to your guns!

  • I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one. Lizardbreath14 Iit's funny you mentioned your bigger dog smelling your belly because my boxer has been doing this as well.
  • She sounds sweet :)
  • My dog is definitely having some separation anxiety, although he isn't acting out with bad behaviors, more just very needy ones. He shakes anyone he sees we are getting ready to leave the house, he will lay on the mat in the bathroom while I'm in the shower, he doesn't leave me alone for a second. I kind of feel bad for the little guy, he seems so nervous.

Also, no one is allowed near my belly on Buddy's watch! He'll bark and jump and get all excited when people he loves, my mom, my sister - even DH! - hug me, touch my belly or even talk to my belly.

  • My dog has gotten more clingy and protective of me. He won't lay on his bed anymore, just at my feet. He knows something's different about me.

  • Both the cat and the dog know something is up. The cat sleeps as close to my belly as she can whenever she can - I think she might hear the heartbeat? She's also "making muffins" on my legs all the time, whereas that used to be reserved for just the couch cushions.

The dog smells me a lot as if to make sure I still smell the same kind of "weird" as I did last time he checked. He's also gotten pretty protective of me in regards to strangers. While normally the sweetest, most friendly dog on the planet that loves everyone and everything, if I am holding the leash on a walk he will bark and back away from any adult that wants to pet him - he doesn't react that way when DH has got him.

  • My dog isn't acting badly, but just more clingy than normal and getting away with certain things he never used to get away with (like jumping up on the bed)!  He seems a little bit "on edge".  I feel bad for him because we took his couch/room away.  We let him in the nursery so he can smell everything out for a few mins/day and that seems to have helped a bit.

My nephew came over this past weekend (he is 6 mo) and my dog treated him SO well - melted my heart!  He just sat there in front of him and wagged his tail and smelled him.  I hope he reacts the same way when we bring ours home!

Also, my sister said that with her dogs her DH brought over a blanket from the hospital that was on the baby so the dog could "know" the smell before they were released from the hospital.  I plan to do this as well.

  • Animals act weird depending on the pregnancy. With my first my dog wouldn't come near me and knew I was pregnant before I did. This time she will allow me to pet her, etc.

  • Definitely yes! My dogs are driving me insane. They both need to be pretty much on me & they both rest their heads on my stomach (which I kinda love). But they have also started counter surfing, getting into the trash & bringing random things to the back yard!?!

  • They can feel stress and things that might be affecting you. Lot going on.

You can try the DAP pheromone plug in. It helps with anxiety to calm them.

Also you can try a Thundershirt that also helps with anxiety.

  • My dog hasn't acted at all like he suspects something is happening. But, I've been taking time to reinforce all of his good behaviors, especially on walks. I'm hoping this will help him feel more confident/secure for when we do bring baby home.
  • This content has been removed.
  • My dog and my cats are acting insane. They are not even trying to hide the fact they're being bad. I think they smell the hormones and can tell that the baby will be here soon.
  • YES! My pug won't leave me alone, even sitting on my feet while I brush my teeth! He's peeing/pooping in the house, running around frantic, barking at my husband, and even knocked over all my piles of clothes and bedding in the nursery. I'm trying to show him extra love and keep my husband from locking him in the basement! lol
  • YES!!! like nicolinab said, my dog is pooping and peeing in the house, following me into the bathroom, and constantly being attached to me more so than normal. The only place he is going to the bathroom in the house is the nursery, which is where we used to keep his crate since the basement is too cold. In the last few weeks we have moved his crate to the spare room, and he is not a fan, so he lets us know by marking his former territory. We have to get the carpets cleaned now before we can put the rest of the furniture and stuff together.

  • My maltese mix has been a little insane lately. We have starting calling him dictator instead of his name these days. He must be able to see me at all times now and is getting a little aggressive towards other dogs and people when they get too close to me. If I am sitting down he is sitting with his head on my belly.
My other two dogs are still behaving somewhat normally, as normally as the dictator will allow them. I miss getting snuggles from all my dogs. I am hoping we can get this behavior under control soon.

  • My cat pooped on my husbands pillow while we were out the other day. Needless to say, she's on thin ice with both of us.

It has taken 8 months but I think we finally got her to mostly stop scratching at the carpets and chairs (just in time for us to be moving and having a baby thus shaking her poor little life up again) We are still working on her nipping and licking all the time, mostly on my husband since we wants 0 to do with me since I got pregnant.

  • Wow, I am glad I am not alone... My yorkie has always thought he was king of the castle... but is definitely on worse behavior now that he senses something is up with me.  He has had SOOOOO many potty accidents... all of them right by our front door.  We think he is marking it so that no one comes in, since he is our 3 lb. protector.

We have let him in the nursery to let him sniff around.  He used to get really pissed about me sitting in the glider pretending a pillow was the baby, so we made sure to practice that scenario a lot and he is getting better.  He also went crazy when we first set up the stroller, but after a few times of me pushing it around the house, he is much better.  I think our little pup just needs to practice some scenarios and he will be fine... but I am sick of him peeing on my front door rug!

  • My female dog knows something is up and barks anytime my (much smaller) male dog gets near me. He is not very bright so I don't think he notices anything.
  • Yes!! Ours is getting into the trash when we leave the house, but also wants me to hold her and cuddle her a bit more! It's crazy how intuitive pets can be!
