Oy. (Anyone else GBS positive?)

So what a scary appointment today. The good news is, I am a loose 1 cm dilated, which means I made some progress from last week, so I feel good about that.

The bad news is I'm GBS positive and I'm allergic to 1 of the 3 drugs they give during L&D, and my strain is resistant to one of the other drugs, so there's only one drug they can use. I've never had it before so here's hoping it works and I don't have a reaction to it. The doctor wasn't overly concerned about me being GBS positive but I am concerned anyway because my water broke at home last time (which she said the only time to be concerned is if your water breaks at home), and because I labored very fast last time, and obviously it will likely be faster this time and who knows if the antibiotics will even have time to work by the time baby arrives. Also, did I mention it's about an hour drive to our hospital? :-/

Then, baby girl's movement was super slow this morning. Not making kick counts at all. So I had to do an NST as well, which turned out OK, but it took them no joke 10 minutes to find the heartbeat to even hook up the monitor. So that was 10 minutes of pure panic on top of having just been told about the GBS+ result. The good news is, she did great on the monitor, but that didn't mean I wasn't having panic attacks all morning while she was not moving much, during the 10 minutes they couldn't find the heartbeat, or while she's telling me about my GBS+ result and how I can't take the first two drugs they usually use for it.

I need chocolate.

You do need chocolate. Sorry you are having all of these sources of stress right now. I have no GBS wisdom, but am sending you (hugs).

Thanks @RN536, that makes me feel a little better

Of course if you google GBS+ you read 900 stories on babycenter about how everyone's baby got GBS after they tested positive, so I was feeling rather gloomy about the whole thing.

No advice. Sounds like you had a stressful morning. Big (((hugs)). I hope that the meds work and that baby increases those kicks so you can relax a bit before the arrival

I don't have any advice but will offer you some ((hugs)) and direct you to immediately find chocolate for consumption

I find the heartbeat at home usually in 30 seconds max but at my appointment today it took her 2 dopplers and 5 minutes... I had a mini panic attack. I almost offered to find it for her, I don't think she would have appreciated that though

Yikes...you do need (and deserve) some chocolate. I don't have any insight into the GBS+ thing as I wasn't with DS and I haven't been swabbed yet for this one (that's next week). I would have freaked out if I were you as well. But I'm glad to hear you're making some progess dilation-wise!

I'm so sorry you're stressing and I hope I can provide some advice to make you feel better.

I am GBS + and allergic to all of the antibiotics that can be given to treat it during labor, literally anaphylaxis to penicillin, vancomycin, Keflex and clindamycin. If I were to have labored naturally the MFM were willing to give me Benadryl and Keflex since I have taken Keflex before and not had as severe of a reaction. If I had a reaction I would have a med-free delivery. The way the high risk docs and my OB put it was the risk of baby contracting GBS and having issues is 1 in 1,000. The risk of killing me via an allergic reaction was 1:1. So they can not treat you if things were to get bad and just treat the baby if he/she were to exhibit any symptoms of infection after birth.

My son was frank breech from 20w on though so I ended up with a scheduled c-section and no need for meds. Of course, I'm also allergic to pain meds so I'm recovering med-free from major surgery, but that's another story

Try to relax, you're lucky in that you may have something you can take and will be fine and worse case scenario, they just won't treat you and I'm sure all will still be fine with you and baby. I know how scary it is and I'll be sending so many positive vibes for a perfect outcome!
