Breastfeeding

Pain after stopping breastfeeding

I was exclusively pumping until about a week and a half ago when I started having major supply issues.  I tried a variety of things before deciding to stop pumping for my 3 month old daughter.  She was already getting formula due to not getting back to her birth weight quickly enough.

Last night when I went to bed I noticed when I layed down on my right side that my breast hurt pretty bad on the lower side near my arm pit.  I thought it was from wearing an underwire bra again (I hadn't worn them while nursing), but this morning when I woke up it was very tender to the touch and there is a lump there.  Could this be matastis or a plugged duct?  I slowly weaned off the pumping so I'm not sure if this would be possible.

Should I call my midwife?

  • It could be a plugged duct. I think with mastitis you would have flu like symptoms too. I'd call your midwife just to see what you should do about it. I just recently stopped BF too, but I went cold turkey. Good luck!

  • Definitely sounds like a plugged duct. I had one and baby nursed it out. I'm not sure what you do if you're not nursing. I would call your doctor for advice. You want to take care of it do that it does not become infected and develop into mastitis.
