  • You know what has worked for me? Eating. LOL. I had chronic, miserable heartburn with my first. This time, I read something about staving off heartburn by keeping something in your stomach and you know what? It has worked! Whenever I feel heartburn (like right now) I know I need to eat, so I pop a couple tums (or not), have a snack, and boom. Heartburn cured.
I rarely get it this time around.
    Hope that helps!

  • Zantac 150 twice a day and Traditional Medicinals brand Throat Coat tea as needed.  Tums make my heartburn worse, so they're a no-go for me.  I do mylanta on occasion as well.  Also, when it gets really bad, unhooking my bra helps.  For some reason just feeling that loosen makes it better.  Not enough that I don't need to do something, but enough that I can deal with it.

    CSC arrived 5/7/12

    CHC arrived 6/2/14

  • My doctor just switched me to Prilosec! It is by far the best. Second best for me was Prevacid twice a day.
  • I will third the Prilosec. My doctor switched me two weeks ago and it has made a huge difference.

  • My heartburn is not too bad, but I take Pepcid Complete when it flares up. It works immediately and tastes delicious.
  • Tums as needed and cutting the things out that trigger the heartburn.

  • I was taking Zantac and tums too and feeling horrible still so my dr. Finally have me a script for Nexium and it has changed my life!!!! Seriously no more heartburn/bile etc. Good luck!!!!
  • None of the acid production ones (Prilosec, Zantac, etc.) helped me at all, nor did the mainly calcium based antacids. The only one that's worked (and worked well) for me is gaviscon. It's got aluminum something or other that helps form a foam barrier and it's been a godsend so far.

  • I tried @joules235‌ trick with celery. It actually worked. I've heard papaya enzymes work too

  • Tums and actually I drink a clay mix that my mom got sometimes when it gets reeeaallyy bad. It's like powdered clay you mix with water and drink, takes like 10 mins to kick in but works really well after that.
  • Mine hasn't been too awful but my doctor said I should start by changing my diet but can take tums & Zantac. If those don't work, I can try Pepcid.
  • I was taking Zantac 150 twice a day and Tums as needed but it wasn't helping. I just started Protonix 40mg and it seems to be doing the job.
  • Tums has worked for me. It generally only flares up at night so I pop two before going to sleep and prop myself up. That worked fine up until a few days ago. Since then I've been waking up in the middle of the night with it. :( Going to talk to my midwife about it on Friday.

  • 150mg zantac twice a day and tums. Taking the zantac with water helps speed up how quickly it works.

Staying away from foods like pickles, tomatoes and acidic fruits (so like all my favorite things).

  • Tums.
What gave me more relief was changing my whole diet.  My mom suggested the GERD diet, and it helped tremendously!  I avoid most citrus (except my low acid OJ which the nutritionist suggested), tomatoes, fatty or fried foods, no red or fatty meat.  I try to eat really small meals fairly often.  I don't drink as much liquid during or after eating.  Don't lie down after eating.  Stopped wearing anything tight or with full panels (this helped a ton).

Bananas, apples, melons, pears, peaches, most non cruciferous veggies, organic yogurt, almond or coconut milk, not fried fish or shrimp, and sadly anything carbohydrate related (sugary bagels) seems to be fine!

I still have issues, but I'm more of a eliminate as much of the trigger person rather than feel like crap then take medicine person.  Although, my OB said take a tums as a preventative with every meal whether i need it or not- at least i get some calcium.

    TTC since 2010.
    IF since 2011.

  • Protonix. Blessed, sweet, miraculous Protonix.

  • Pepcid/famotidine and tums.
  • I find it's at its worst when I eat bigger meals, so I try to stay at smaller snacks throughout the day as much as possible. Like @joules235, I have a hard time pinpointing what it is that gets me.

I don't like the dyes or corn starch in most pills / OTC meds available, so I've stuck with ginger stuff, and it's helped a lot: ginger tea, GoOrganic ginger hard candies (they're the BEST! found them at Stop & Shop). I also had these chewy ginger candies from Trader Joe's that were great.
  • I'm on Protonix 1x day.  Its a prescription drug for GERD.
It was working great from week 26-30 but recently has not been as effective.  I've switched to taking it with dinner, but still end up puking in the middle of the night from the reflux.

Doctor recommended using Gaviscon between doses.  Tried the chewables for the first time last night --- NEVER AGAIN.  Its like chewing alkaseltzer.  It fizzes in your mouth and I swear its what brought the vomiting on last night.

I have noticed that Chocolate is a major trigger - very very sad.  But every time I eat chocolate, I end up throwing up from the reflux.  Chocolate flavored reflux is much better than pizza though...

  • Tums Smoothies & Zantac150mg. I have also been freezing bananas & then putting one in a blender with some vanilla almond milk. Tastes great. Takes the heartburn away & is healthier than ice cream!
