April 2014 Moms

chills, sweats, hot flashes

I looked back over a few pages and didn't find this discussion anywhere, so I thought I'd approach the topic.

Every day since my baby was born, I've been having bouts of jaw-chattering chills, hot flashes, and drenching sweat. It's gross. I don't feel poorly when I'm hot, but when I'm chilled I lose all color in my face and have trouble concentrating. I do not have a fever, though I feel like I do. Our doctor, the surgeon, and all of the nurses I've spoken with say it's normal release of pregnancy hormones and it can continue for weeks. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: chills, sweats, hot flashes

  • @Ooopsbaby14 - are you over 35? I'm told that it's more common in moms between 35-40. I am 35, and this didn't happen with my first when I was 27.

  • I did too and it felt like the flu. My doctor told me it could a sign of breastfeeding difficulties or simply being run down. Ive just been trying to sleep more during the day and I'm meeting a LC today. Feel better!
  • I'm 3 weeks pp, 34 y.o, and still get the chills and hot flashes every day...can't wait for it to clear out!!

  • Same here and I'm 28 and 1 week pp. Less hot flashes, but the chills on and off all day and at night I wake up drenched in sweat. It's impressive, it feels like I just got dunked in a tub, I've had to change the sheets every morning since I got home from the hospital. Yuck.

  • Nearly three weeks PP, I'm still having chills and hot flashes (36 yrs old). Waking up drenched in sweat and suddenly freezing is delightful. Interesting that it's more common in older moms, I had no idea. Kind of a sneak peek at menopause, I guess :/
  • Every night i sweat my butt off when i am asleep. When i wake up i am soaked and then i freeze threw a whole breast feeding session since i am so sweaty. A never ending cycle..

  • I had chills, sweats, and hot flashes pp with all 3 of mine, ages 30, 32, and 33.

  • I get the sweats like crazy; I wake up throughout the night totally drenched like I showered.  I'm 29 and had it with my first at 27 so I don't know that age is a factor.

  • Still sweating here. I practically had my head hanging out the car window like a dog yesterday and made DH turn on the a/c. He thought I was nuts.

  • I am 2.5 wks pp and 30. I sweat at night regularly and had extreme chills once around 4 days pp. It freaked me out really bad. They were intense and scary. The LC told me it could have something to do with my milk coming in.

  • I am 30 y.o. and 7 wks pp. still get the chills during the day and sweats at night. My shirt is soaked when I wake up. Happened last night. I don't remember it with DS, but the first 3.5 mos with him were a blur.

  • The sweats and chills are no joke! I'm only 2 days PP and I've already woken up drenched a few times. Ugh. I guess the next few weeks will be fun.
  • Not so much the chills, but I've woken up drenched in sweat since about a week or two before delivering and still do.  I always run kind of hot though, so I'm used to feeling overheated; although I never knew sweats and hot flashes were a PP thing.  (Btw, I'm 22 and a first time mom.)

  • In the hospital I had a really bad night of extreme chills. I got up to use the bathroom and just started shivering. The closer I got to the bathroom the worse they got. DH had to help me back to bed I was shaking so hard. I was so scared. I couldn't control my body. Nurse brought me two heTed blankets and I was still shaking. I finally settled down and next thing I knew I was drenched in sweat. That cycle lasted all night and the night sweats a day or two longer. I'm 30. Dr said it was likely a mixture of all the hormones.

  • I'm 25 and I sweat like crazy at night, then freeze when I'm up breast feeding bc I'm wet with sweat. I'm 3 weeks postpartum and it's slowly starting to lessen! Thank goodness!
  • I'm 27. My LO is 8 days old. I have the hot flashes/sweating. I also feel cold a lot lately and I'm usually warm. I have shivered more in the last week then in the last ten years. It's really painful with my c section too.

So glad this is normal! I was thinking I was crazy. I kept asking DH to adjust the thermostat :)
  • @lcr23 - I'm glad I was still in the hospital when mine started, so the nurses could explain what was going on, otherwise had we been home when it all started I would've insisted on going to the ER. I feel that miserable.

  • Chills and sweats and I had it with both babies. I'm 29
  • Yes! I'm sweating my ass off one minute and freezing the next. It's super fun :(
  • I've been getting chills & sweats the last couple of nights & I'm 26 & 17 days PP.
  • Yes. With ds1 I had some chills but mostly hot flashes and sweats for at least a couple months..I was so uncomfortable! With ds2 i still have those symptoms but much milder and pass quicker. Did you have BP issues? I assumed with ds1 that my pre-e was related (I had an emergency csection and my BP stayed high for over a year). I had mild pre-e this time and my BP went back down after a few weeks. One other difference is that I was much heavier with ds1than I am now. I was 26 with ds1 and I'm 30 now.
  • I had all this with both boys.  Totally normal.  It's the hormones.

@Sunshinelou - My blood pressure was only high for 4 days during my 38th week of pregnancy, and other than that, it's been right in the middle of normal, and it's on the low end of normal now. I haven't had any chills for about 3 days now, and I'm not sweating as much at night - I think it's finally regulating. I'm breastfeeding a lot, so my breasts aren't getting engorged now, so maybe that has something to do with it.
