3rd Trimester

Haven't done this in a while and need a refresher....

Ladies,

This is my 3rd pregnancy.  My girls are 13 and 6 but I am rather confused as the healthcare in this area is quite different than what I am used to.  My due date is April 28th so I am 38 + 4.  I have been in active labor hard contractions that wrap around my back and then I feel them in the front for 2 days now.  I am 2 cm dilated.  I went to L & D last night because they were one on top the other and I thought for sure that it was time.  Of course my soon to arrive baby boy proved me wrong yet again with stage fright and the moment they hooked me up to the monitors everything that I was having dissipated.  My question is this the nurse that checked me told me I was 2cm and soft but still thick.  That really sounds like a contradiction to me.  Any insight from any of you moms?  My last OBGYN was very informative.  At this point I am starting to get frustrated as they sent me home with Ambian and Vicoden?  I know those are probably spelled wrong but how can these be safe for the baby if your not being monitored?  Any suggestions as both doctor and nurse told me to go home and sleep it off, whereas my old OBGYN would have said ok your obviously in a lot of pain and uncomfortable lets get this thing started....

  • Some places won't augment labor until 39 weeks or some other benchmark. I'm sure it's frustrating but if you were only2cm you're really best trying to let your body make more progress on its own.

  • Ditto @Rrrrrachel - I was at L&D Monday night with painful contractions just one day before my EDD but they started spreading out to 10 mins apart and I was only 2 cm and 50% effaced.  They sent me home, thinking I was in early labor and would be back on my own in a few hours, but if your body has not progressed to a certain point, then an induction may not end well.  You are also not at your EDD yet so there is no reason to rush things along.

  • Sadly most doctors will not induce you unless t is medically necessary and there is a threat to either you or the baby. I was 38 weeks, in pain everyday, and at the doctor and they basically said their hands were tied. The baby will come when he/she is good and ready. However if you want to start the process since you are almost 39 weeks you can pump your breasts. It will put you into labor. Some people find it wrong to do, but to each their own. Everyone I know that has done it went into labor within 72 hrs. Pump for ten minutes on each side or just lay back and relax until that little one is ready to make his or her debut!!!
  • I think when she said thick she was talking about effacement (sp?) . Example 2cm dilated 50% effaced. The cervix thins out as it dilates. hTH

  • With my 3rd pregnancy I was @ a 4 & 30-50% effaced for about 4 days before they induced (I was also a week overdue). I think most doctors want to push you as close to 39-40 weeks as they can. Mine will ok inducing around 38 weeks for 2nd+ pregnancies but I really try to avoid it at all cost. Those medicines they gave you are awful strong for a pregnant lady but that's just my non-medical opinion lol

Anyways, I think your going to have to settle back & just let nature take its course. If your ready & able & want it to happen sooner rather than later, take some extra walks, get yourself a birthing ball & bounce, throw down with the hubby....none of this stuff ever works for me but I know it has with others LOL

    Good luck!
  • Ok So i'm going to ignore the first part of your comment and comment on the last part that everyone else seems to be ignoring. Narcotics like Vicodin are not safe, unless you are in a huge amount of pain that you can't handle and Tylenol can't help with at all don't take them. I would also recommend googling for more information about them and what they can do to your baby.
