Another food post, sorry

edited April 2014 in February 2013 Moms
I just want someone to tell me I'm not alone. DS keeps spitting his food out, and it's driving me bonkers. We had pasta and red sauce tonight and he really seemed to enjoy it, but I don't think anything made it into his actual stomach. He would pick up a piece, pop it in his mouth, chew-chew-chew, then spit out the chewed up pieces. So, I went to my go-to "baby's not actually eating and I need to get something in him" cheese sticks, and he was spitting those pieces out, too! @-)

I don't think there's anything wrong with him developmentally or otherwise because most days he swallows food. He's probably just being a toddler. Maybe he's not hungry, but he's barely ingested anything all day other than breast milk.

My motto lately has been, "Well, I tried." :-??

  • Yep. I don't give him anything different though (unless I served something that he genuinely doesn't like). My thought I'd that if he's hungry, he will eat. It's that whole "lead a horse to water" thing.

  • DS has some dishes we know he will never turn down. Spaghetti sauce over spaghetti squash, noodles, chicken, ham, cheese, anything bread like (muffins, toast, etc.) But we have so many odd hit and misses. Things he loves then suddenly turns down and spits out. We just continue to serve him what we eat. If he eats all his chicken, but spits out the peas, then NBD. At least they were offered. And after he gave it a go of his meal, I will offer dessert of some fruit so I can make sure he has a few extra bites in him to make me happy. Some meals disappear faster than we can blink, and he double fists it, others are a struggle. I just believe they have their days and I don't stress about it too much. I totally get where you are going, but it also worry about limiting him to just the things I know he likes without offering others that he doesn't. But he will spit out foods he likes, then reach for another bite. I think maybe he just doesn't like the texture of that bite, or just isn't in the mood for that food that day.

  • Feeding DD lately has become such a hassle. I actually get anxious before every meal because I never know if she will decide to eat or not. She just doesn't ever seem to be very hungry. Something she liked yesterday gets thrown on the floor today. Even things she has always liked (fruit, bread) she hasn't been too excited about lately. It's so weird.

Basically, if she doesn't eat what we give her, then she just has to wait till the next meal to eat again. I rarely only offer her one thing at a meal, so if we offer her the two or three things we're eating and she hardly eats any of it, then she's done. We do give her snacks sometimes and she still drinks water and her bottles of milk. I guess if she's hungry, she'll eat. It's hard to not get worked up about it when you feel like they're hardly eating anything though :(

We have similar babies lives. And YESSS to the bolded. I think I'm oversensitive to his food intake because when he started daycare at 8 months he refused to drink milk via every.single.method and he dropped like 2-3 pounds. He was big for his age at the time, but 3 lbs is still A LOT for an 8 month old. He can still wear some clothes that were starting to get too small at that time  =((

I appreciate everyone's replies, though. I'm just trying to breathe through it and trust that he'll be fine and won't wither away lol

  • I have similar issues with my DS. He doesn't eat much at all as far as solid food. I offer him whatever is for dinner but most of the time he takes a bite or two and that's it. He won't drink water only breast milk. It is so frustrating! And while he hasn't lost any weight, he only weighs 17 lbs 11 oz. I have no advice, but I can sympathize!
  • Yep, DS barely eats solids. I definitely feel like I suck at feeding my kid. He's still nursing a ton, so I'm grateful for that. He's been having a lot of constipation issues too. We just started giving him those individually wrapped dried prunes and he loves those. I'm super excited I found a healthy snack that's easy to pack. He loves mum mums but I feel bad when they basically become a meal. If there was a mom report card, I would not be earning high marks in this area.
