vericose and Spider veins

so...how many of you mammas out there have experienced varicose or spider veins in your first pregnancy? And any tips or advice on how to prevent them or keep them from getting really bad? I know they say its hereditary and unfortunately my mom and sister both have them bad! I was hoping to get lucky but I just realized that I have a few spots on my legs that are purplish and a few spider veins, they are not painful or awful looking yet (just mildly unattractive in my opinion!) Im 31 weeks and this is the first I've noticed them! I have compression socks that I wear sometimes since I am a nurse and am on my feet a lot, but doesnt like they will help! Advice and tips??

Re: vericose and Spider veins

  • I already had spider veins on my thighs to begin with. They haven't gotten any worse.

Varicose veins do run on my mom's side of the family but so far, I don't think I've gotten any. There are a few spots I'm keeping an eye on. There isn't too much you can do, really. If they're going to happen, they're going to happen. Compression socks and keeping your feet elevated while you sit/lie down is pretty much it.

I have read that the ones caused by pregnancy tend to go away within a few months after delivery, so I'm not stressing too much. The ones my mom has aren't from when she was pregnant with me.

  • I didn't really notice any with my first but last time I got a doozy of a varicose vein on my ankle (like the whole thing looked like a giant bruise) and it's come back even earlier this time (bringing along some friends I'm afraid).  The good news is that they all went away after delivery - except for the varicose vein on my calf that has been there for like 10 years.  Since this is my last, I'm getting any lingering ones zapped in a year or so - my one vanity procedure ;)
  • I guess there are just some body changes in pregnancy you have to except :( On top of just growing this baby and between trying to prevent stretch marks and these nasty veins and keep the weight gain in check, I'd have a full time job! Sometimes it just easier to not care and yet I do lol! But on the bright side its all for a good cause!
