The D@mn Nip Shield

DS is 2 wks. They slapped a nip shield on me while I was in recovery from csection (highly medicated) after announcing my nips were flat. Now DS won't nurse without it and he'll fall asleep and the filled shield will dump milk all over his face and me when he unlatches. Please give me some hope we will be able to wean from this stupid thing?? How to do so? Hate always needing to clean it and make sure it's on hand every feeding. Thanks

  • If you switch sides during the day try w/o on the second side.

This. Or half way through a feeding slip it off and pop baby back on before they know what's going on. Like when baby is nursing really good and you know milk is flowing. It may take a while but it will happen.

  • Thanks ladies for the encouraging words!
  • I was able to get away from it by taking it off halfway between like pp suggested. If she started freaking out when I took it off then I'd put it back on. I did this for a few days then after that I'd try starting without it. If she wouldn't latch I'd use it. After a few days I didn't even think about using it anymore. My LO is almost 4 weeks.
  • My advice would be to try to wean her off now. I waited too long and my daughter still won't latch without it at 10 weeks.
  • we struggled with this too--i would let DS nurse for a while with it on so he wasn't frantically hungry, then took it off for a minute or two. if he tolerated it, great, and if not, i'd put it back on again right away. eventually he was able to do more and more nursing without it until we didn't need it anymore.

here's a great article that goes into more detail about weaning off the nipple shield: https://www.bfhomehelp.com/1/post/2014/04/nipple-shields-everything-you-never-wanted-to-know.html
