Preemies

Questions for preemie moms...

I am on hospital bedrest and I am going to be delivering no later than 34 weeks due to my vasa previa diagnosis...hoping I do not go into labor before then...they have started prepping me with steriods and such...I guess my questions are:

When did you deliver (how many weeks)?

How much did baby weigh?

How long before baby went home?

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery?

Thanks so much and take care....

Re: Questions for preemie moms...

  • When did you deliver (how many weeks)? 32 weeks

How much did baby weigh? 3lb, 2 oz

How long before baby went home? 4 weeks

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? At birth: on CPAP (ventilator), Level 1 IVH (brain hemmorrage), mild anemia, low white cell count, jaundice. After leaving the NICU, he developed reflux and caught an infection (Group B Strep/sepsis/bacterial meningitis) at 6 weeks old, due to a weakened immune system. Mild developmental delays (about 1 month behind). He's doing great, all things considered...I don't think anyone would know he was preemie other than for his size.

    How much did baby weigh?
    1lb 7oz

How long before baby went home?
96 days. He went home on his due date.

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery?
Well, he had major lung issues and spent 5 weeks on the vent and another 3 on CPAP. He had some digestive issues after that and kept scaring us thinking it was NEC but it never was. But that caused lots of weight gain issues.
Then there are the As & Bs which I didn't think would EVER stop. (but did)
He had a PDA which closed with a round of meds.
He had a double inguinal hernia which is really, really, really common in boys of his GA. (26weekers have something like an 85% chance
    )

  • Good luck!!

When did you deliver (how many weeks)? 32 weeks

How much did baby weigh? 3 pounds 3 ounces

How long before baby went home? 33 days

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? We did NOT get the steriod shots, those are a big help! Ruby was on CPAP off and on for almost 3 weeks, had bradycardia, and had and still has reflux. She came home on an apnea monitor and reflux medication but now she's doing GREAT!

  • When did you deliver (how many weeks)? 28w4d

How much did baby weigh? 2lbs 4.8oz

How long before baby went home? 91 days

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? As far as we can tell at this point, nothing long term. He had mild ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity; an eye issue), spent 48 hours on the ventilator and about 2 weeks total on the CPAP, he had some digesting issues, which is what kept him in past his due date, but they appear to be resolved now. He does have reflux, but lots of babies do!

  • When did you deliver (how many weeks)? 32 weeks

How much did baby weigh? 2lbs, 8 1/2 oz

How long before baby went home? 4 weeks

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? On CPAP for first day then giving oxygen for about a week through the nose more as a precaution. Put on caffeine for sleep apnea for about 2 weeks.  Home for a little over a week now things going well gaining and eating as should. Biggest challenge before discharge was learning to take the bottle.

  • When did you deliver (how many weeks)? 33 weeks

How much did baby weigh? 3 lbs 11 oz each

How long before baby went home? 1 month

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? I did get the steroid shots, but they still had lung problems, needed oxyen, CPAP, trouble keeping temps up, trouble learning to eat on their own. Needed NG (nasal-gastric) tubes until they learned how to breast feed and take bottles.
Now I have two happy healthy babies.

    Good Luck !!

  • When did you deliver (how many weeks)? 35 weeks 3 days

How much did baby weigh? 6#

How long before baby went home? DS stayed one extra day, was never in NICU.

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? I went into preterm labor at 34 weeks, was stopped w/ a shot and mag drip.  This allowed time for the steroid shots, I went home on bedrest for one week, baby was persistant anyway.  NO complications during delivery, special care staff on hand, none needed.  DS came out screaming, was given to me, etc.

DS stayed an additional day to be under the bilirubin lights.  We went in for a jaundice test and a weight check every two days for 1-2 weeks.

DS has hit most milestones on target, a few have been behind by 3-4 weeks (usually the late end of "normal" range).

How much did baby weigh?  1 lb. 8 oz.

How long before baby went home?  94 long days

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery?  no major issues... he had apnea bouts in the hospital & "suck, swallow & breathe" issues but other than that he was healthy.  He had a hernia & a hypospadis which were repaired this year.

good luck & I hope your little one "cooks" as long as possible

  • When did you deliver (how many weeks)? 30 weeks exactly...I was on bedrest due to IC (rescue cerclage at 21 weeks...3 weeks on BR at hospital, rest at home)...my water broke at 29w, 6d and I was able to have 1 of the 2 steriod shots for their lungs before my labor became active and I delivered via c/s b/c Baby A was breech.

How much did baby weigh?  Each twin weighed 2 1/2 pounds, but they had IUGR

How long before baby went home? They were discharged the same day...13 weeks after they were born.

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery?  WE have no major issues, just pretty much everything that happened was typical for preemies...on oxygen, had some bloody stool issues that were resolved due to fortifyer, we didn't have to have any surgeries, etc.

  • When did you deliver (how many weeks)? 29w4d

How much did baby weigh? 2lb 12oz

How long before baby went home? 50 days

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? She was on oxygen for 6 hours after birth and under the bili lights for about 3 weeks because she couldn't get her levels under control (part of it was due to a bruise she got on her head coming out and all the blood she had swallowed while in utero), but for the most part she was just a feeder and grower. We were extremely lucky that she did so well, other than her size she's at her actual age in most things :)

  • 1. I was induced at 34 weeks.  My water broke at 24 weeks, sealed at 29 weeks, and broke again at 30 weeks for some unknown reason.  My doc doesn't let anyone with pprom go past 34 weeks because the risk for infection goes waaay up after that point.  I did get the steroid injections at 24 weeks.

    2. 5lbs 10oz.  I had a growth u/s 3 days prior to my induction and they said she was 4lbs 12oz, there were off quite a bit.

    3. She came home after 1 week.  She needed to get 7 days of iv antibiotics because my placenta had chorio on it.

    4. Nope.  She didn't need any oxygen ever surprisingly.  She never once had a single episode on her monitors either.  She is our little miracle who has done better then anyone could have expected.  I thank the steroids for this.

  • First, best of luck to you. This is a trying time, but the longer you can keep the baby inside, the better. I am sure the healthcare providers have been telling you that again and again.

When did you deliver (how many weeks)? 32 weeks (I had pre-eclampsia)

How much did baby weigh? 3lb, 14.3 oz. (the neonatologist suspects I had inter-uterine growth restriction due to the pre-eclampsia)

How long before baby went home? 4 weeks

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? At birth: level 1 IVH (brain hemmorrage), jaundice. No ventilator, no CPAP, etc.

Now, my daughter is 7 1/2 months old and weighs 18 lbs. and is 28" long. Definitely not preemie territory any more! We had a repeat ultrasound and the brain bleed has resolved.

She had jaundice that just wouldn't go away. She was under the blue lights in the NICU for about 10 days of her approximately 28 day stay in the NICU. Even now I look back at pictures of her up to 4 months and her skin definitely had a yellowish cast to it. Now, she is getting to have invisible pink skin just like me, so it has finally resolved.

She has no developmental delays that we have noticed.

This was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but I am so amazed at my baby every day. There is something new to learn about her each day, and I love discovering new ways to make her laugh, new games she likes and so on. It's so much fun!

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? I did get steroid shots and Lily was only on CPAP for less than 24 hours, then had a nasal canula for quite a while. Our biggest problem was feeding and gaining weight, she was fed through her ng tube for 39 days and finally started to sucessfully bottle feed then. We had a five day period where they stopped her feedings completely bc they thought she had NEC, but that turned out to be a staff infection and was the reason she was having so many residuals.

How much did baby weigh? 1 lb 11 oz

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery?  She had standard preemie stuff - some breating problems (vent, then CPAP, then nasal cannula), feeding problems (coordinating her suck/swallow) & digesting problems (but no NEC thank goodness), anemia of prematurity requiring blood transfusions, UTI requiring antibiotics, etc.  But she is doing SUPER well now.  She looks like she might have a lazy eye or a convergence problem developing now but we haven't had her looked at for it yet.

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? We did not have any serious complications...DS had to learn to eat, maintain his body temp (which was his biggest hurdle) & had to be under the bili-lights for jaundice. I did not receive any steroid shots.

  • 1. 34 weeks, 2 days

    2. 5 lbs., 4 oz.

    3. She came home with us.

    4. None except for DD not being able to latch/breastfeed. We spent the first 5 weeks bottle feeding and me exclusively pumping. Around her due date she learned to latch and I had no problems bfing after that.

I wish you all the best...my situation was different from yours because I had no significant complications other than gestational diabetes - but that had nothing to do with my spontaneous labor.

Were there any complications with baby due to the early delivery? He had surgery to close his PDA (small hole in his heart) at 3 days.  Mild ROP which corrected it's self.  Mild reflux.  Nothing major and he is now 3 and happy and healthy.

  • I delivered at 34 weeks.  DS weighed 7 lbs, 9.1 oz.  He spent part of his first night in the regular nursery, but stopped breathing during a feeding.  They took him to NICU in the wee morning hours where he stayed for one week.  It was explained to me that sometimes when babies are born early, they haven't gotten the suck-swallow-breathe combination down yet.  I'm not trying to scare you, but you asked!  He's had no lasting complications, though.  Relax and take care!  Bed rest is no fun!
