Baby unlatches and cries

I'm totally lost here. My 2 week old has had a great latch and strong suck from the start. Problem is she doesn't seem interested in nursing and just wants the bottle. I switch her from side to side, but she sucks maybe 3x before crying. And this is with the milk flowing after I've pumped or hand expressed a little.

Is this a common issue we need to work through or do I just have a baby who will not breastfeed? What can I do?

  • Sigh...definitely has a bottle preference :(
She started getting formula in the hospital because she was sooo hungry and my colostrum wasn't enough for her. She's a big baby (10 lbs) so more hungry than most. The nurses also wanted to make sure her blood sugar didn't drop
  • I don't think it's really true that bigger babies are "hungrier than most."  Babies are designed to only need their mother's colostrum, and I think it's really unfortunate that so many health care professionals don't trust that.  It happened to us in the hospital, too.  Just keep nursing and stop offering a bottle.  She will eat; she won't starve herself, I promise.  And then wait until a month or so before reintroducing the bottle.

How do I get through the fussing and crying? She gets so worked up and turns red. How long till it gets better?
  • The more you nurse , the better your supply. It's going to take a day or so to get her back to the breast. Just keep offering every time she is hungry. She'll get it. It might be a good idea to have an LC consult.

  • I agree w/pp in that you need to just hang in there, the beginning is so strange, confusing, and difficult. Bottle preference may be the culprit but also look at how you're physically brining LO to the breast. Make sure you're not pushing her head but use your hand on the back of her shoulder blades. It may seem wrong but newborns apparently have a reflex to push their head back if you press the back of their head. I went through two lactation consultants who suggested nipple shields and blamed a shallow latch. The third LC literally just asked me to move my finger and the problem was solved! It may not be the solution but def worth looking to make sure you two are positioned correctly. Good luck!! This part is so difficult but you'll get through it.

  • The PPs have great suggestions.

The only thing I would add is to check for thrush. My DD had a REALLY bad case, and she lost her latch as a result (I ended up EPing for a year) because it was so painful for her.

If you see little white patches inside her mouth or on her tongue that look like cottage cheese - that's thrush. You and LO can keep passing it back and forth as well.

    Good luck!
