Chair for reading with toddler?

We are expecting a new baby any day now, so we want to move our large, very comfy upholstered reclining glider out of DD's room into the new baby's room. We have been using this chair daily with DD for reading and cuddling before naps and bedtime. We don't necessarily want to spring for a new one of these ($800), since in the next year or so she'll surely be out of her crib and into a toddler bed, where we might be able to sit with her to read. At that time we'll probably get her a kid's chair since she has the space in her room. Any ideas on a cheaper solution? We checked craigslist and didn't find anything yet, and time is running out. Just curious if any of you have solved a similar issue, and if so, how...

Re: Chair for reading with toddler?

  • What about a bean bag or some big Euro pillows on the floor in her room?  Like you said, once she's in a big bed, you can (and she probably will prefer) to read on that.  Or just read on your bed with her now.  I just think that for such a short term situation, it's not worth purchasing a piece of furniture.

For DS2, we packed up the glider I had in his room when we put our house on the market so now, I just sit on the floor next to his little chair (looks like this) while we read or we cuddle on my bed and read.

  • What about one of the PBK kids chairs? DD and I sit in hers all the time to read.

She has one in her playroom. You both fit in that?? I'm tiny and I can't imagine us both being in there. But yeah, I am glad to hear you all say you don't have an adult sized chair in there. DH was convinced we needed one.

  • We use a $25 dog bed from Costco and a big pile of pillows. The dog bed is covered with a crib sheet. I love it. It's in DS's reading noon. I've been known to fall asleep for several hours on it :)

I sit in the chair and she sits in my lap or on the arm. Kids aren't as picky about furniture as we are. If you already have the PBK chair, I definitely wouldn't purchase anything new.

  • DD is getting a big kid bed very soon, and we're going to move the crib and rocking chair into the room we're turning into a nursery for DS.  When we do, I figured I'll either sit on DD's new bed to read with her at bedtime, or we can sit on the floor together.  I definitely wouldn't buy another chair in your situation.

  • Thanks for the input! I think at 37 weeks pregnant the thought of sitting on the floor seems daunting, but once I'm back to normal I'm sure it will be fine.

We had this exact same problem so we started a new routine of before bed DD gets to choose three books and bring them into mommy and daddy's bed to read. She really likes the cuddle and reading time in our room that she doesn't miss the chair at all. I've also loved having her still in a crib. We ended up buying a second crib for the baby.

Oh heck yeah - I would keep DD in her crib until she was 14 if I thought that would fly. I can't even imagine what's going to happen when she can get out of bed. I'm terrified!

  • We read on my bed all the time- my little one still has a glider in her room, but she LOVEs to read in my bed.
  • So you all read books in your bed, then walk down to LO's room and just plop them in their bed? DD is so active and curious, I was afraid that if we let her roam the house right before bed (there's a fair distance between our bedroom and hers) so might get even more amped at bedtime than usual and fight us on going back to her room for bed. I guess we'll try it and find out!

  • If we read in our bed, he usually has his paci and blanket to snuggle with while we read.  When we're done, I carry him from our room to his so that he doesn't have the chance to get down and run around.  He's usually happy to snuggle his head into his blanket and just lay on my shoulder as we walk to his room.  Sometimes I'll sing to him as we walk.
