I still don't know how to feed my kid

Like I'm sure many of you are, we're in the awkward stage with *some* teeth, but not all, making it really awkward to find foods DS can eat. He does ok with steamed veggies, beans, crackers, and tiny chunks of cheese or certain fruits, but beyond that, idk what to feed him. I don't have the patience to clean up post-pouch messes, so if I give him one I end up feeding it to him. Plus, it's kind of tricky finding things I can prepare for one adult and one toddler without creating a lot of waste. He can't seem to eat bread, and if something isn't soft enough to chew with his gums, he spits it out (he used to choke, so I much prefer spitting to that). Also, we're mostly meat-free, so that limits options, as well.

I know I saw a few of these threads awhile back, but I couldn't find them in the first 8 or 9 pages, so I'm starting a new one. What do you feed your kid?!

  • Hmmm rice and cheese is a good idea. Or rice and cream of mushroom soup with some veggies thrown in. And that sounds like it would re-heat well, too, yeah?

I haven't tried scrambled eggs in awhile, maybe I should re-intro those now that he's more into feeding himself.

  • My lo has 7 and eats everything and has eaten everything since she didn't have teeth.. I give her whatever we're eating then add some oranges or yogurt if she doesn't eat enough of it..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • Every day we do berries or some small pieces of melon.  Quick veggie options she likes are Morningstar black bean burgers, corn dogs, nuggets, and buffalo wings.  I pour out coarse shredded cheese directly onto her tray.  M really goes for the jars of meat sticks too, if you want LO to have meat but you don't want any.  She is extremely picky so many days we have pb&J or grilled cheese.  I cut up the pieces small and she handles them without any molars.
  • Oooh, I'm going to make those apple cinnamon quinoa bites! Thanks!

  • Breakfast is typically Oatmeal, egg or toast with peanut butter or jelly.

Lunch we do a lot of yogurt, cheese, crackers, fruits or veg (she loves cucumbers or red peppers cut into fry size strips)

Dinner: anything we eat! Avocado, broccoli and sweet potato are all big hits. Pasta with veggies and a little olive oil and parmesan cheese goes over well.

  • How do your kids eat oatmeal? Do they actually use spoons, or do they use their hands? It just sounds like DS would need a bath and change of clothes after breakfast and I ain't got time for that ;)

  • I spoon feed him oatmeal myself. It's a weekend breakfast food bc during the week we have to be out of the house by 6:45, so if it's not a food DS can feed himself, he doesn't have it then lol,

  • My son eats everything so far except milk. He only has 5 teeth but chews his food like he has them all lol some examples:
Breakfast today: scrambled eggs, a banana and blueberries

Lunch today: string cheese, mandarine orange, shredded chicken and some pieces of naan

Dinner today: steamed green beans, meatballs and cheese

Dessert: lol Earths Best honey graham cookies....

  • My LO is a good eater but sometimes she gets picky especially with meat and fish. She always knows when it's hiding in there and spits it out. So now I make a special sauce and mix it up all together. This week the sauce was crumbled feta and sour cream. The week before it was plain yogurt with garlic. She will eat anything in a crazy sauce!

Tonight we had Greek food, she would eat rice and potatoes no problem but no chicken. Tatziki mixed with sour cream add the chicken...ate it all!

dumb question - do you string (lol) it for him? or do you just hand him the whole thing?

You didn't ask me, but t have to cut DS' string cheese into chunks. I've tried handing him the whole thing, but he ends up biting too much off, not being able to chew it, and spitting it out.

Not dumb to ask! He's a hog and would try to shove the whole stick in his mouth. I break it up into pieces lol

  • We are on the boat of DS eating what we eat. We just chop it down to bite size for him. He is starting to develop a serious sweet tooth.... Eats most fruits but wants nothing to do with most veggies now. Loves his broccoli and OMG pregnancy brain just kicked in and I can not remember what the frick those little cabbages are called!!!! Help me!

Anywho, I vote try feeding your LO what you eat. Just make the food soft and chop it small enough for him to "chew". He's gotta learn at some point. We did BLW and DS still has gagging moments. It's perfectly normal.

So we went out to lunch today, and DD ate an entire kids meal of grilled cheese (minus crusts - too crunchy) And fries! For serious??? Shouldn't they be older before they can do that? FYI - I don't make fries a nap it, but she luuuurves them and I needed a half hour of peace.

DD did the exact same thing last night! Except she had apple slices instead of fries since she usually doesn't care for fries.

But lest you think she is some kind of 14 month old health nut who turns her nose up at all junk food, she had a complete meltdown when the ice cream we were sharing was gone. ;-)
