Pregnant after IF

Can we talk pregnancy teas?

edited April 2014 in Pregnant after IF
Being a coffee drinker prior to pregnancy (I literally had my 1 cup a day up until my trigger shot...) I've now switched to teas. The problem is, it seems like there are only few and far between teas that are universally "approved" for pregnancy. I purchased the "mother to be" yogi tea in bulk after reading reviews, but then ended up seeing conflicting information on webmd, and some other pretty reliable sites about stinging nettle (one of the ingredients) not being good for pregnancy. There was also conflicting info on the main ingredient, the raspberry leaf. I couldn't drink it anymore without being paranoid, so I've stopped for now (even though I bought 6 boxes of the stuff...sigh). The only tea I feel "safe" drinking is the mighty leaf organic mint, and after trying multiple David's teas and finding ingredients time and time again that weren't "safe for pregnancy" I gave up and decided I felt better having ONE cup of my lipton yellow label black tea with milk and honey in the morning (supposed to be ~40mg of caffeine or so, I only step for 30 secs) rather than worrying whether or not I'm having an ingredient that may or may not cause miscarriage. Am I the only one in this boat? Being sort of "cold blooded" I can drink cups and cups of hot tea a day. I tried the lemon slice in hot water for awhile but just don't find it very satisfying. My mom used to always make me drink that when I was sick as a child so it always reminds me of that.

Suggestions very welcome! Is the "mother to be" tea perfectly fine? I just can't get over all the conflicting information. Have you found a tea that you love that's "safe?" I hope I'm not the only one feeling this frustrated!

Re: Can we talk pregnancy teas?

  • Good question. im curious to see the responses. I gave up coffee when I got my BFP. I only drink tea when I really need something. To be honest I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it. Work has a kuerig view, and I drink the English breakfast black tea they provide (i didnt even think to check it out). Also when out to dinner or lunch I've been drinking unsweetened ice tea in lieu of soda (trying to reduce sugar intake).

  • I pretty much went off caffeinated drinks because I prefer to get my caffeine from chocolate :) I am staying away from most herbals because I've heard chamomile is associated with increased risk of m/c and I don't like mint in general. I have been mostly drinking Bigelow brand decaffeinated chai which I figure is OK because it's just spices. (And I steep it in milk I've heated to steaming hot, and not for too long.) At Starbucks I get the vanilla rooibos tea latte (maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks) after reading several sites that were overall mixed but leaning toward positive on rooibos in small amounts.

  • I do decaf coffee... I know it also has it's bad reviews, but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.  If I gave up everything, nobody would even want to be around me.  I thought about the herbal tea idea too, but it seems like the cons outweigh the pros.  So I'll stick with my decaf, and occasionally treat myself to the real deal...
  • Oh, I went through this, too. I did research and more research and then decided to just give up the tea! LOL. Everything seems to be so contradictory that I just decided it wasnt worth it in the end.

  • Just do a cup of decaf. It's ok and won't hurt you or baby and is probably better than drinking questionable teas all day.

I did some research into teas because I'm a big tea drinker. I did read that my favorites (herbal) can actually be worse than tea from tea leaves. One I did find that is fine to drink and I actually enjoy is roobios tea. The information I gathered on roobios tea is that it is actually great for pregnancy. The trick is making sure that there are NO additional herbs used. I found some at coffee bean that only have vanilla and roobios. It is fantastic. I drink it iced and it is delicious.

  • I know it's so confusing and I freaked out yesterday over some tea I drank.  I think I"ll just stick to decaf green tea for now.  It should be safe right?

  • Glad I'm not the only one reading all of the contradicting info.

I'll definitely check out some of the suggestions here. I would do the cup of decaf coffee, but honestly, I'm too lazy :-/ We have a Jura coffee maker (the kind that grinds and is pretty instant) so to brew the decaf in the morning when I'm rushing to go to work isn't realistic. But I definitely will have a cup of decaf if it's readily available :)

  • I drink decaf flavored black tea sometimes now instead of the coffee that I used to drink, which I have an aversion to now.

  • Ugh this is killing me too! I drink more tea than coffee so it's tough. So far, the only consistent information I've read is black tea/mint tea are safe. Roobois tea is too, but I never drank it before so I'm hesitant to start it now. And I know decaf tea still has some caffeine so I'm avoiding it.

My view is to play it safe early on, I'd rather be safe than sorry. But water is boring lol.

  • I still drink my 1 cup of coffee a day and was told by my RE and MW i could have 200-300mg of caffeine a day so I def take advantage. As far as teas Ive been told ginger teas, mint, and roobios teas are perfectly others in moderation or avoid.

  • i asked my regular OB this at my official "first appt" after the RE.  i had heard some bad things about chamomile. i'm a huge fan of celestial seasoning's sleepy time tea (has chamomile amongst other things).  she told me not to worry - as long as it's a legit co/brand and i know what's in it that chamomile should be ok.

i'm also a HUGE fan of starbucks lattes (need it to get through toughest work days) - it's fine to drink caffeine as long as you keep track of how much you're drinking (<200mg) a day.  i did cut back significantly on my caffeine consumption but did not cut it out totally. for instance i used to always get a grande (the medium -which has 2 shots of espresso) but downgraded to a tall (1 shot only) - and didn't get one every day.

basically, everything in moderation is ok.
