Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby's first solid foods?

My daughter is about to turn five months old, at four months her pedi advised that I start her on solids. I started with cereal but she wasn't the biggest fan so I went to organic veggies then fruits. Now a month into feeding her solids she just still seems hungry throughout the day I alternate food with bottles and was just wondering at this age how many ounces of solid fruits/veggies you were feeding your LO in a day? And also how long do you wait until starting stage two foods?

Re: Baby's first solid foods?

  • We started solids right at 5 months, LO will be 6 months next week. We do two "meals" a day, about 2oz of oatmeal mixed with fruit in the morning and 2oz of brown rice cereal with veggies in the evening. I'm making my own foods so the amounts are approximate and most of it is fairly thin or soft.

  • My LO is just over 5 mo. We have been doing solids for about three weeks. First sweet potato, then rice cereal and then butternut squash. This weekend we will try apples. Generally one solid serving mid to late morning. We haven't adjusted her milk schedule. Her solids are in addition to what she eats from the bottle.
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.
  • Yeah she still takes just as many bottles I just meant I giver her food Inbetween bottles either fruit or veggies.
  • 2-4 ounces of puree a day if he's willing to eat it. Some days he doesn't eat any. He's not a fan of cereals at all, so we're mostly doing purees. You can start stage 2 foods when LO has tried and not had any reactions to stage 1 foods. Although stage 1 vs stage 2 foods are highly dependent on the brand. Usually stage 2 foods are a bit chunkier and that takes some getting used to for your LO, so if she doesn't like those at first keep on offering stage 1 purees.

  • It's more about experimenting with the different tastes and textures then it is about how much you feed them at this point! Breastmilk/formula gives them the nutrients they need and everything else is a bonus until 6 months. I always try a solid in the morning with my little girls (5 months old) breakfast feeding. Some days she'll eat half a container of a fruit/veggie and other days she'll have a few bites. They'll tell you how hungry they are, babies can't over eat! Don't stress about the measurements! :)
