Chapped or thrush?

In the last couple days I have chapped cracked nipples just on the top side. Baby I on antibiotics for ear infection, I had an issue one day that I had poor pump placement, and I have sprouted leaky breasts for the first time. It hurts when she latches and improves after a few minutes, no deep tissue pain. I haven't noticed signs of yeast in her mouth. I started using lalolin again to see if it's just chaffing. We have been successfully BFing for 5 months with early latch issues. Is it possible that her latch changed? Does thrush present without deep tissue pain? She nurses comfortably and isn't detaching or acting like its painful. Thank you in advance for your input!

Re: Chapped or thrush?

  • I have had chapped red nipples without thrush, and felt like you described. The pump made it worse.

The antibiotics are iffy though. Without signs in LOs mouth, I would wait it out. If you get really worried, try a nurse line.

  • My LO's latch has changed a lot since she started teething. I've had to try various positions like the football hold and laying down with her facing me to ease the discomfort. My nipples are starting to heal, and I've been using lanolin as well. I was so ready to say goodbye to nursing because it was so uncomfortable.
