They have test strips? I wish I could get my hands on those. I have been feeling wet down there for days and fear that I'm leaking amniotic fluid. I have to wear a pad to feel dry.
@scarfbandit, they're actually pH test strips since amniotic fluid is at a different pH than most other random bodily fluid. So I bet you can get them...just not labeled what you would expect. I'm not sure what pH they turn color at, though.
@scarfbandit, no problem. I just googled it and it sounds like normal vag secretions are slightly acidic (4-5) while amniotic fluid is neutral (7-7.5) so standard litmus paper should work as long as it's on a 3-9 scale. If I remember correctly, normal acidic fluid would be pink while amniotic fluid would be blue or blueish purple.
I had amniotic fluid leak last pregnancy, but not until the day before I went into labor. It doesn't feel like wetness, it feels like you suddenly peed without releasing your bladder. Mine happened when I got up to go to the bathroom MOTN. I was awake enough to know I wasn't peeing, but a cup or so of fluid poured out when I stood up without my being able to control it. Not to be confused with normal pregnancy related peeing yourself...
In the second trimester I wouldn't get to alarmed about wetness, even in third tri I wouldn't run to the hospital unless: - I felt a pop or pressure along with wetness - I felt a steady flow of fluid (like i was consistently peeing) - there was a huge gush of fluid(like in the movies) - these paired with contractions either before or after it happens
I will say it's rare that your water breaks and labor starts, most times your labor will start and either your doctor will break your water or a strong contraction will break your water.
