Working while pregnant

So I just had to share a work story from yesterday. I was in a meeting and the conversation came up about a girl and they asked if she was working. The other woman at work responded with "oh no she's not working, she's pregnant" like it was just understood that pregnant women don't work. I actually chuckled out loud and then she realized what she said. Man if pregnancy meant you didn't have to work for 9 months I missed the memo!

Ha! Right?! I plan on working until my water breaks to save leave.

Yeah, that'd be great! For me, it'd mean I wouldn't have to go back to work on Wednesday to start the school year...maybe I should inquire about this

  • I'm right there with you all. Everyone at work was joking that I better have him on a weekend so I can be back to work on Monday. I have taken one sick day in the past 4 years, so it will be strange to take my 6-8 weeks for maternity leave. The thought never crossed my mind that I couldn't work while I was pregnant though.
  • I missed the memo too! Wish I got it though, working sucks right now.

Yeah, I am trying to convince my boss to let me work from home after I have the baby. I just have so much that I won't be able to train others to do and it has to be done weekly. Gahhh, it's going to suck when I come back lol

I actually talked to my boss about that this past week. He's going to get it cleared, but I can just log in remotely and work a couple days a week and get paid for them on top of my maternity leave. It's still in the beginning stages, but there are a lot of things that no one else can really do and it would be pretty difficult to train someone for them to only do it for a few weeks.
  • That actually happened to me!

  • Haha, where do I sign up for this no work thing?  Wish I didn't have to and wish I didn't have to go back afterward!  Although, I'm going to go down to working 4 days a week!

  • Haha I read the subject line and finished the sentence with "sucks".

That is the case on most days. Yesterday was a good pregnant work day though because it was my birthday and I think my being pregnant made the 30+ women extra nice. I got flowers, a fruit basket, and a baby book so yesterday was an ok day at work lol.

No joke. I actually had false labor at work with my second and had to leave to go to the hospital, they told me not to come back until after the baby came, lol. SO would be ecstatic if I would cut back on my second job and just take my photography clients because he hates me working so much.

  • I have to say, people call out of my work for the sniffles. I told my female coworker-who is a mom- I had morning sickness, couldn't focus, wanted to curl up in a ball for 3 months, but I made it to work! Mad respect yo. Being pregnant doesn't make you an invalid and if I ever used it as a "get out of work" free card, my DH would probably never speak to me again.
  • I guess I'm lucky that i work from home, but i guess my mother isn't looking forward to handling some Christmas orders without me.

  • I guess it was just the way that you guys were poking fun at someone not working whilst pregnant. I was trying to get hope from other women that struggle with work to the point of being disciplined, and I happened upon this insensitive board.

    Are you high?
  • Wow, kind of makes me feel like a loser for having difficulties working. I have a SCH, and besides that, I literally cannot move as fast at work, can't remember anything, and am getting poor reviews due to all this.... Y'all are lucky!

Andplusalso, you just put on your big girl panties and work. It's that simple. It sucks. I puked all the time at work. I had to call in some days, but I worked until I was put on complete bedrest at 19 weeks. I had to stay home, in bed, and be bored for 16 weeks. Oh wait, for 14 weeks- I was on hospital bedrest for 2 of those.
Not a single person on here "judges" someone for not working because of complications. This insensitive board was more supportive and entertaining than anything I could've gotten from "real life" friends.
Quit having a pity party. If you can't work because of complications, I'm truly sorry. If you can work, but "it's just so hard, buck up. It's life.

If you are looking for support, go to your own BMB, a trimester board, or high risk pregnancy. Don't dig up a nine month old thread on a board you have no connection to and call us insensitive.

If this thread wasn't what you were looking for, you could have moved along without commenting.

  • @sugarstar1784‌ While I stand by my original response, I also understand your concerns. You need to discuss this with your boss, your care provider, and your SO/support person.

Care provider: Discuss what's happening and how you feel. Its probably normal for pregnancy, but you might feel better with a different vitamin or diet.

Boss: Explain how you are feeling. See if its possible to alter your break/lunch schedule or work from home part of the time. (No clue what you do for work or if it's even feasible). Just realize that you WILL also need flexibility when returning after maternity leave.

SO/other support person: See what they can do so you can get more rest at home.
