Re: First Dentist Trip

  • DS was a week shy of 3 years old. They looked at his teeth, counted them, did a quick cleaning and flossing, and that was it. He thought it was great and they gave him tons of goodies.

  • Shamefully, it was just a bit ago. DD1 is closing in on 6 and DD2 is 3.5. They took xrays and did a cleaning. The dentist was wonderful and the girls can't wait to go back.

he was 2 yrs 2 months or so. he got to play in the playhouse in the waiting room, then 15 minutes or so in the exam room (giant wooden submarine, other toys, paintings on wall, etc.) then the tech talked to him for a few minutes, he loosened up. dentist came in, he sat in my lap & leaned back for the quick exam (counting teeth, notes of crowding etc.) then he got a prize out of the basket and a trip to pick a few toys out of the treasure chest. a quick tour of the chairs where the big kids sit & the video game room & back to the check out desk. on the 2nd visit the dentist looked at his mouth for a bit longer but it was still pretty quick.

lots of people (on TB especially) say that early, regular visits to the dentist get them used to people looking in their mouth. well, DS had developed quite a bit of anxiety due to regular visits to the pedi (he would cry at the sight of the scale, the measuring tape etc.) so i was skeptical about the dentist. but he really did well & we now talk about his dentist all the time when he gets reluctant to brush or floss. if you go to a pediatric dentist, they will know how to make it fun for the kids, & you can talk it up between visits.
  • DS was 2. They told me that it would just be a "happy visit"; show him around, take a ride on the chair, count his teeth, things like that. He did so well in the chair that she did a cleaning as well. He's gone every 6 months since then and just loves going to the dentist!!
I need to call soon and book DD's first visit.

  • My kiddo went around 18 months and again at 2, but neither of the visits went very well so the dentist told us to hold off until 3. At the first couple visits, they counted teeth and applied fluoride. At the 3 year visit, they did x-rays, a cleaning, a full exam, and fluoride. It went really well at 3, so much better than I expected. I'm glad we waited a year between visits, but now that he's comfortable, we'll go every 6 months.

DD was 18 months. The dentist documented her teeth and cleaned her teeth- toothbrush and floss. She also gave me great advice on how to brush her teeth more easily. I loved her dentist!

DS was 12 months, is now 2, and all the dentist has done is look at their teeth. It is less than a ten minute appointment for both kids combined. We moved and have a new dentist; I am not as impressed with their new dentist. :(

Joey has an appointment booked for just after his 3rd birthday at our family dentist.  I'm totally bailing.  DH booked it with his appointment so Joey can watch him get his teeth cleaned first.   Good luck with that.  I'm staying home.

This is us as well. I don't like the dentist and Dh doesn't mind so i am leaving that up to him.

Ds went just a little over 3. He didnt do very hot. He got scared bc the lady was playing with the suction thing. She came about it all wrong. Dh got pissed. He started shaking & closed off. We went to our family dentistry. But the dentist came in & he loved her. She just counted & looked at his teeth. I'm strongly thinking of taking him to a pedi dentist. He needs some distractions
