High-Risk Pregnancy

High blood pressure since before pregnancy, not yet pre-e?

Hi ladies! When did they diagnose you with pre-e? I'm overweight (technically obese, size 16, 5'4, 208lbs pre-pregnancy) and have had high blood pressure for 6 months before pregnancy (148/101). They keep talking theoretically about pre-e and putting me on hypertension medication, but so far haven't actually done anything. Any thoughts? Should I be pushing the issue more with them?

Re: High blood pressure since before pregnancy, not yet pre-e?

  • Hi! I have had genetic chronic hypertension since I was 25 (I'm 32 now) and I am 5'2" and 115lbs pre pregnancy so yours may just be hereditary! I take generic Norvasc when not pregnant but have had 2 health pregnancies (kids are 2.5 years and 11 months) while taking methyldopa 250mg 3x a day. They only thing was I had more frequent monitoring for blood pressure in case a dozing adjustment was needed and in 3rd trimester, I had biweekly biophysical profiles and non stress tests, the fear is that there can be growth restriction just due to the underlying cause of the hypertension (even if it's controlled by medication) or you develop pre e. I never developed pre e but was induced at 37 weeks 5 days with my daughter because she was measuring in the 2nd percentile. Now, at 11 months, she's in the 90th percentile and healthy as can be! The did induce my son at 40 weeks exactly but not due to any concern; the doc just said that they don't like to let women with pre pregnancy hypertension to go beyond 40 weeks. Message meif you have more questions! Best of luck and congrats!!

a bit off topic but for those that tracked BP daily, what time of day is it better to do it?
    Thanks
  • I always do one when I wake and one before bed. I also try to fit in a random one during the day, my ob said to try at different times.
  • I had borderline high blood pressure prior to getting pregnant with DS and was therefore diagnosed with chronic hypertension during pregnancy. Chronic hypertension is not the same as pre-e.

I was not put on blood pressure medication, but then my diastolic blood pressure was never over 90; that was the level at which my doctor said he would prescribe medication. I had extra monitoring (three ultrasounds after the anatomy scan) to check baby's growth and amniotic fluid levels. I was induced at 39w3d and had a successful and quick vaginal delivery.

My situation was different than yours as I didn't have hypertension pre-pregnancy. But I wasn't diagnosed until I had elevated blood pressure for a few weeks and protein in my urine during my 24 hour urine test. That was around 31 weeks.
