New Pump Parts?

Hi ladies...not sure if this would be the right board but I just wanted to see what the general opinion is...

I'm 38 weeks with #2; DD is 4 so it's been a while to say the least. I just got out the breast pump and spare parts. I have 6 sets of parts that I had stored away in the garage for some time. They still look pretty good (only pumped for 5 months), but I'm thinking since it's been so long, maybe I should get new parts.

What would you do? Thanks!

Re: New Pump Parts?

  • yup, exactly what PP said.

  • I have a Medala as well and five years between kids, pumped about 6 weeks with DD1. With them having been in the garage, if they weren't in a climate controlled environment, I'd just make sure there are no signs of rot/mold, etc. If it looks good, I'd do a good wash and a boil to sanitize and the order new tubing and membranes.

  • I might be a little concerned about the deterioration of the plastic, which will occur with any plastic over time.  If this doesn't worry you, I'd do what PP suggested.  On the other hand, if you just want to be 100% comfortable and you can afford to do so, maybe you could buy new pump parts.  I have bought a lot of extras for pumping at work and the Maymom brand (compatible with Medela) is very reasonably priced.  I have not noticed any difference from the Medela parts.

  • I just bought new flanges and collection bottles since my old one was not BPA free. I use it for back up only since I got a new one for free from my insurance. Might check into that and see if your insurance covers anything too.
