breast pump accessories? help me, STMs!

I got my Medela PISA today in the mail. The box seems to have most of what I need in it? I think?

What other accessory type items do I need to have? Obviously I'll need more stuff if I start taking it to work when I go back, but what do I need for standard in-home use? Anything besides what it came with?

You might need a few more membranes.  They tend to wear down after a while and you'll lose suction quality.  I found it helpful to buy an extra set of flanges and nozzles so I didn't have to wash every single time I pumped.  (Though if you refrigerate the pump parts between pumping, that'll buy you some time too).

Once I went back to work, I got the car charger adapter so I could pump on my commute to and from work.  You may want a hands free pumping bra.  I found that I could mount the pump parts well enough in my regular nursing bra so I didn't need a specific hands free one, but I think that largely depends on your breast size/shape.

I also bought an extra ice pack so that I could freeze one while using the other.

You don't need things that don't come with the kit, but they're convenient if you can get them.

  • Thanks @gertiebarden!

I didn't know if I needed anything else to get started, or if I could wait until LO is here and figure it out from there. I did get a hands free bra when simple wishes was having a deal.

Oh yeah, you can definitely wait and see what you need.  Unless you're planning on EPing, you'll have plenty of time before you'll want any of it.  Even with EPing, it's more of a convenience than a necessity.

  • You definitely have some time, but gertie's suggestions are good. I just used a regular old ice pack in rotation with the provided one. I replaced my membranes once. Other than that I didn't have a need for anything extra, it would have just been for luxury for me.

  • I found a pump bra really helpful. I didn't have one at first and didn't think I needed it until I got one. Oh what a difference.
