Baby Claritin

So I think LO has my awful allergies, I'm allergic to pretty much everything except food. I'm extremely allergic to dust, dust mites and tree pollen. Anyway she sneezes all the time and still has a rattling in her nose/chest. She's had that from day one but dr said most babies do at first. Well I've let time pass and even tried having her sleep with her Vicks humidifier and it's not gotten any better. And lately I feel like she's itching her nose with her hands. The dr said it may be allergies and if I want can give her Claritin, I'm guessing there's a kid version. Basically I want to see what other peoples experience is with using it. Sorry for the novel! TIA

Re: Baby Claritin

  • My doctor said I could give her 1/4 tsp of children's claritin. I havent done it yet.

There's a children's liquid that is labeled for children 2 and up, but many pediatricians are okay with giving this or children's Zyrtec to even very small babies. (Sidenote: Zyrtec actually has FDA approval now for 6 months and up, with some actual studies in safety and efficacy, but both Claritin and Zyrtec are generally regarded as safe for infants.) So if your pedi gave you the go-ahead, I think it's worth a try. I would start out with 1/4 teaspoonful (1.25 mL), and see if that helps.

ETA: Wanted to add that I'm a pharmacist. After reading my post, I felt like I came across as a know-it-all.

  • We just had Claritin and Zyrtec recommended for allergies (itching from food allergy hives) this week. 1/4 tsp.

  • My LO has been prescribed 2 mL of Claritin at bed time. It helps a ton! She got allergies from her dad. She has been taking it for a little over two weeks. She is 19 weeks today.
  • I've been wondering this, as well, because O.G. has had nose congestion since birth, and it hasn't gone away.

  • I was told babies couldn't have pollen allergies this young and it was probably viral...we're going to discuss it again next week since he's still sneezing and miserable. He's been sneezing since he was born.
  • Thanks ladies I went and got some Claritin and I'm gonna try it tonight. We'll see if it helps, hope so. Good luck with all of your LO as well. It is sad to see them dealing with allergy stuff already!
  • I was born in August and was born with symptoms of sneezing, itchy eyes, etc. They thought something was wrong and it was just seasonal allergies. To this day, August is usually a bear for me.
  • My doctor definitely validated my concerns and told me about Claritin. She said it should dry the congestion right up and it wouldn't hurt her a bit. DH and I both suffer terribly from seasonal allergies so I wasn't surprised that my baby did too.

This is exactly what I've been told.
Same from our Ped, but I know it can't be true. Itchy eyes & nose...the list goes on, but the same symptoms the rest of us are having! Our Ped said Benadryl & other allergy meds don't work on babies either?? Sounded crazy at the time, now sounds even crazier after reading about other docs recommending them!
Our doctor said she doesn't like the meds for young babies, so maybe that's why they act like the allergies don't exist! Who knows, but I'm going to call again today and talk with my real doctor.
  • Benadryl is fine too (it's actually the best antihistamine over-the-counter), it's just not used first-line most of the time because it has more side effects and affects children more unpredictably. Usually it just causes drowsiness (unless you're one of the lucky moms whose kid it makes hyper and crazy), but sometimes can cause constipation, dry mouth, etc too. But it's usually considered safe to give in small doses for its intended purposes (pre-medicating before a flight to make your child sleep not being one of those uses).

    Ah! Thank you so much.

FTR, I don't plan on using it for that unintended purpose ;)

Lol, I didn't think so, but I would almost bet on seeing that as a FFFC in the future. Ha.
