Pregnant after a Loss

MTHFR and successful pregnancy?

Hi ladies. I'm lurking from TTC after a loss. I've suffered 2 losses in the last 7 months. Finally just got test results back and I have MTHFR. Doc wants to put me on neevo (Which I haven't heard great things about) and baby aspirin. I'm a little concerned she didn't recommend lovenox to me for the blood clotting and thinks that the baby aspirin will be ok. Anyone go thru this and have success? I just want to do the best for me and my one day future baby. Thanks ladies for your time and opinions

Re: MTHFR and successful pregnancy?

  • It might depend on what kind of MTHFR.... I was diagnosed but only measure I took was extra folic acid. My RE doesn't think there is a correlation between MTHFR and miscarriage because it is so so common. They said I could take baby aspirin but it would strictly be a placebo so I didn't.

I am compound hetero MTHFR. I didn't even know that and had a successful pregnancy with DD.

I had multiple losses after DD and that's when I learned about MTHFR. The pregnancy with my rainbow, I took extra folic acid and baby aspirin. Like pp said, my RE and OB don't really believe that MTHFR causes m/c, so the baby aspirin was basically placebo to make me feel better. I also asked about lovenox, and was told I didn't need it because all my other levels were normal.

  • I am also compound hetero for MTHFR. It's actually very common here. It depends on what kind you have. There is a site www.mthfr.net (I believe that's the right address) and from lots of research is appears that folate is a more active form of folic acid so I am on that instead of folic due to MTHFR. The Thorne Basic Prenatals have folate in it and they also make a B complex that has folate in it. I am also on baby Asprin. My doctor also doesn't seem to think that my losses had to do with it but there is really no way to know.
  • I have the worst form of MTHFR. My RE recommended folic acid and aspirin. I am in the medical field and tried to argue for lovenox. My provider was adamant it was not necessary so I let it go. I am 19 weeks pregnant and so far all is well. My provider also feels there is little link aside from just the folic acid piece. It was hard for me to let it go but I'm glad I did.

  • Thanks ladies. At least I know there's hope :)
  • I have a homozygous C677t mutation and the specialist I saw at MFM said he wouldnt even treat it because they no longer believe MTHFR mutations are linked to miscarriages. And also just having the gene mutation doesnt mean you automatically have clotting issues. You also need to look at your homocysteine level. My MFM doc said taking baby aspirin wouldn't hurt though so it was up to my OB. I chose to take it just so I felt like I was doing something. I'm 31 weeks now and all is fine.I don't think the baby aspirin is what really made the difference in this pregnancy (we're also dealing with a genetic component) but I dont think it hurt anything and after 3 losses I was willing to try anything. If you're still uneasy maybe you could ask to talk with a MFM or other specialist who could give a second opinion.

I am exactly the same type MTHFR as you. I have an appt with my RE on the
29th so I'm curious to see what he recommends. What do u believe u did differently this time to help you get this far along?
  • I don't know if I have it or not (strongly suspect yes for various reasons but couldn't even get testing for it because the doc I saw at the time doesn't believe it has any m/c risk so would not test for it as part of the RPL workup and didn't seem to understand it well - basically said if I hadn't had heart problems in my 20s then don't worry about it) but switched from regular folic acid to folate (quad-something methyl-something...) as a just in case - can't hurt/could well help measure and then got pg quickly and this pg has stuck.  Of course there could be absolutely zero connection, or just benefits of placebo effect, but ... I'm going to keep taking folate!  I take the "Doctor's Best" (cheesy name but oh well - whole foods and amazon have it so easy to get and not too crazy expensive) kind and then also the Country Life B-complex as co-enzyme forms (also from amazon - harder to find in stores) both of which have the quad-something-methyl-something form of folate.  And I also love that b-complex because it's the only one that I've found that doesn't have the awful smell most do and doesn't make me nauseous like most b-complexes do.

    Good luck to you!!

  • I am late to this thread, and sorry to intrude from PAL, but I have MTHFR, and I had a successful pregnancy with my son, Vincent. I didn't take anything besides much more folic acid, nor was it recommended that I do. Every case is different :) Hopefully this gives you hope!

@Campow83‌ With this pregnancy the only thing I did differently was taking the baby aspirin daily and I was on progesterone in the first trimester. Those things may have helped and I wanted to do everything I could but i don't think it's what made the difference (for me). My DH has a translocation which gives us a 50% chance of miscarriage with each pregnancy (due to monosomy 13 or 14 or trisomy 13 or 14). This pregnancy has likely made it this far because we finally got a good sperm that didn't cause one of the above issues. I hope your appointment with your RE goes well and you can get a plan in place!

  • So I had an appt with my RE today whom I haven't seen in 2 months since my loss. My OB is the one who took my bloodwork and results shows MTHFR. My RE today says there has been nothing that links this with pregnancy loss and is saying that I don't have anything treatable!!! WTF? How frustrating!!! He said just keep on trying naturally
